Joy Kinley's curator insight, September 18, 2013 9:47 AM

So what's in a name.  For a long time the time period between the fall of Rome and the Renaissance was referred to as the Dark Ages.  The thinking was no learning took place in this time.  Then this same period became known as the Middle Ages.  That would mean that it is a time period but not a lot of important things happened.  Now scholars refer to the time as the Medieval Time Period.  This new name reflects that there was important activities happening, for example cathedral building and laws.  Most use the three names interchangeably.
