Einstein: The Negro Question (1946)

Einstein: The Negro Question (1946) | jazz | Scoop.it
by Albert Einstein
I am writing as one who has lived among you in America only a little more than ten years. And I am writing seriously and warningly. Many readers may ask:
"What right has he to speak about things which concern us alone, and which no newcomer should touch?"

Olgy Gary's curator insight, April 7, 2015 4:09 AM

Some of the quotes I've saved from this article: "The more I feel an American, the more this situation pains me. I can escape the feeling of complicity in it only by speaking out." ..."I believe that whoever tries to think things through honestly will soon recognize how unworthy and even fatal is the traditional bias against Negroes..."
The last two paragraphs in the article gripped my heart and fueled my work on my dissertation.

Just how small is an atom?

Just how small is an atom? | jazz | Scoop.it
Just how small are atoms? And what's inside them? The answers turn out to be astounding, even for those who think they know. This fast-paced animation uses spectacular metaphors (imagine a blueberry the size of a football stadium!) to give a visceral sense of the building blocks that make our world.

"This hypothesis—versions of which have been kicked around for centuries—is becoming the trippy notion of the moment for philosophers, with people like Nick Bostrom, the director of Oxford University’s Future of Humanity Institute, seriously considering the premise." --Ben Makuch

One of the latest missions from the ISS is kind of amazing. The High Definition Earth Viewing (HDEV) experiment consists of four cameras that have been attached outside of the ISS. New lab-on-a-chip device overcomes miniaturization problems

New lab-on-a-chip device overcomes miniaturization problems | jazz | Scoop.it
Chemists have invented a new type of tiny lab-on-a-chip device that could have a diverse range of applications, including to detect toxic gases, fabricate integrated circuits and screen biological molecules. The novel technique developed by the team involves printing a pattern of miniscule droplets of a non-volatile solvent -- an ionic liquid -- onto a gold-coated or glass surface.
