Do We Need Evolutionary Or Revolutionary Change in Management?

Steve Denning nails it. It will take revolution to shift organizations from an internal focus to a customer focus, from working to make money to working to delight customers.

A few months ago, Mental Floss put up a post of “Fantastic 120-Year-Old Color Pictures of Ireland.” Fantastic pictures indeed, although the nature of the technology that produced them seems as interesting to me as the 19th-century Irish life...
Jay Cross's insight:

Venezia wasn't quite as crowded back then. Now it's a zoo in the summertime.

The Spargel Zeitgeist

And then there's Germany, home to spargel, or asparagus, the "royal vegetable." Be it roadside stand or city market, I found the air to be positively heady with the spargel Zeitgeist when I landed in Germany at the top of May. The locals eat it obsessively for the six weeks of the year that it's available fresh. That's because after the feast of St. John the Baptist on June 24, zee fete ist aus (zee party's over).
Jay Cross's insight:

Tomorrow Uta and I depart on a three-week asparagus-tasting tour of Germany. I'll post photos at https://www.flickr.com/photos/jaycross

Are you ready for digital transformation? Probably not.

Are you ready for digital transformation? Probably not. | Jay Cross | Scoop.it
The transition to a digital foundation under the enterprise is becoming the defining business challenge of our time.
Jay Cross's insight:

"The transition to a digital foundation under the enterprise is becoming the defining business challenge of our time," says Stowe Boyd. Four out of five companies say they've embarked upon the journey; only a quarter of them have a clear understanding of what they're doing.

That's bad news. The culture that accompanies digital transformation is the foundation for Modern Workplace Learning. It's one of the "adjacent possibles" required for the great leap forward to deeply social and embedded learning.

Let's face it. CLOs and the training department aren't going to make over corporate culture to embrace transparency, openness, sharing, and tolerance for experimentation. They lack the clout. More likely, cultural change will ride in on the wings of shifts like digital transformation.

Employees Can’t Be Summed Up by a Personality Test

Employees Can’t Be Summed Up by a Personality Test | Jay Cross | Scoop.it
Myers Briggs—and I would argue any personality assessment—is neither valid nor reliable.
Jay Cross's insight:

i fear HBR's standards may be slipping. The articles states that "Myers Briggs—and I would argue any personality assessment—is neither valid nor reliable."

Okay, I'm not a Myers-Briggs fan. (As you'd expect from an ENTJ.) But saying that all personality assessments are invalid and unreliable is poppycock. Validity is whether the instrument measures what it purports to measure -- and may instruments do just that. Reliability has to do with getting the consistent results; statistics prove the case for many assessments.

Granted, you learn more about a person's multiple dimensions by talking with them but that doesn't invalidate assessment tools.

I've just been editing the section of Aha! on self-assessment. I'm into this. I took John Kotter's historic course at Harvard B-School, Self Assessment and Career Development. I've tracked the field for decades.

To claim, as Peter Bregman does in this article, that self-assessments just reinforces our blind spots is absurd. The alternative is ignorance.

"Know thyself" is as important a piece of advice today as it was when the Greeks first inscribed the phrase at the Temple of Apollo at Delphi.

Most mergers fail. My guess is that the marriage of LinkedIn and lynda.com will follow the pattern. LinkedIn foresees people looking for jobs on LinkedIn that require certain skills automatically turning to lynda, com to get them. Why would they? These are two independent decisions.

7 little-known side effects of daylight saving time

7 little-known side effects of daylight saving time | Jay Cross | Scoop.it
Springing forward can do a lot more damage than just making you sleepy.
Jay Cross's insight:

I detest Daylight Saving Time. It's disruptive. It upsets one's sleep rhythms.

The Russians did without Daylight Savings Time from 1930 to 1991. Rumor has it that Stalin forgot to decree that people reset their clocks in 1931.

Putin officially called off winter/summer time changes last October. Russians will never reset their clocks now.

I enjoy it when my UK friends go on British Summer Time, which I think of as "BS Time."

How Your Sleep Habits Are Aging Your Brain | Jay Cross | Scoop.it
Experts believe that the lighter stages of sleep, referred to as rapid-eye-movement (REM), help a person process emotional memories and form connections between different bits of information, whereas slow wave sleep—the kind that occurs when an individual enters stages 3 and 4 of non-REM sleep—is especially important for helping information transfer from the short-term memory bank into the long-term memory bank.
