The Effectiveness of Teaching Traditional Grammar on Writing Composition

Jared Deal's insight:

Literature on Teaching and Learning Resource:

Jaeger, G. (2011). The Effectiveness of Teaching Traditional Grammar on Writing Composition at the High School Level. Online Submission

In this article, author Gina Jaeger explains how teaching grammar should not be separate from teaching writing. Jaeger further explains that grammar could be better understood by students if thought alongside of writing. Learning to use grammar skills while writing is proven to be more effective than learning traditional grammar separate from writing. This article gave me a whole new perspective towards teaching grammar. Since I have a fear of teaching grammar the correct way, having the idea of teaching it with writing makes my anxiety towards teaching grammar a lot less lower.

Literature on Teaching and Learning Resource:

Curzan, A., & Adams, M. (2012). How English Works: A Linguistic Introduction (3rd ed.). Boston: Pearson Longman.

On the cover of this book, you’ll find many questions that you may have asked and wondered about the answers.  How English Works addresses those questions while it introduces you to the structure of English, general theories in linguistics, and important issues in sociolinguistics.  As an English or Education major, you will connect academic linguistics to the everyday use of the English language around you.  The English language is always changing, which leads to new insights about how language, and the English language specifically, works. The authors revised this textbook to keep up both with linguistic scholarship and with the language itself.

This book will be very useful to me as an English Teacher. Not only will it help me when teaching grammar, it will also help me to better understand the origins of words and why they are written the way they are.

Adaptations in the Classroom: Using Film to "Read" The Great Gatsby

Literature on Teaching and Learning Resource:

Cutchins, D. (2003). Adaptations in the Classroom: Using Film to "Read" The Great Gatsby. Literature Film Quarterly, 31(4), 295-303.

This article, written by Dennis Cutchins, explains that movie adaptations to novels are acceptable in a classroom setting. In the article, Cutchins uses the novel "The Great Gatsby" to explain how a movie adaptation can be used to "read" the novel. Cutchins also explains what makes a good and bad adaptation. This article was very interesting to read since "The Great Gatsby" is one of my all time favorite novels. Since I am also a huge movie fanatic, I plan to use film adaptations when I teach, so this article really helped how I can effectively teach a novel with a film adaptation.
