Cette histoire ressemble à une utopie, une ville imaginée par un sociologue pour décrire la communauté idéale, et pourtant tout est réel. A Todmorden, une commune d’Angleterre, les habitants cultivent leurs propres potagers dans des lieux publics qui le permettent avec l’objectif de devenir complètement auto-suffisant en quelques années.Aucun camion ou train ne transportera des légumes à Todmorden mais surtout, le citoyen ne récolte plus que ce dont il a besoin et tout le monde donne un coup de main en s’occupant régulièrement des différents espaces cultivés.

 

Pour un horticulteur, visiter Todmorden est un plaisir pour les yeux, une ville tapissée de parterres et d’espaces verts où l’on peut admirer la croissance jour après jour de carottes, choux, laitues, oignons, pommes de terre et de potagers en tous genres, mais aussi d’arbres fruitiers et d’herbes aromatiques comme les framboises, les fraises, les abricots, le romarin, le basilic et bien d’autres.

 

Le projet s’appelle Incredible Edible et a comme objectif principal de rendre Todmorden auto-suffisant en ce qui concerne les fruits et légumes d’ici 2018 ! En plus de l’idée même d’autosuffisance, ce qui est particulièrement marquant est l’harmonie qui accompagne le projet, personne ne ramasse plus de ses besoins, avant tout parce qu’il n’y aucune raison de le faire et parce que, comme l’explique la co-fondatrice du projet Mary Clear « cela ne se produit pas, nous avons confiance en les personnes, nous croyons et nous en sommes les témoins, les personnes sont honnêtes »

 

Les parterres, comme déjà évoqué, sont partout mais il faut aussi signaler un grand verger de 200 arbres dans le centre de la ville, ainsi que des lieux insolites où sont cultivés les potagers : en effet, en plus des parcs classiques, nous pouvons trouver des fruits et légumes devant le commissariat, la mairie et même dans le cimetière !

 

Incredible Edible, ce ne sont pas seulement des potagers éparpillés dans la ville mais c’est aussi l’éducation au goût : des cours sur l’horticulture, sur comment conserver les fruits et légumes ou sur comment faire son propre pain sont activés.

 

L’initiative a certainement interpellé en Angleterre puisque 21 communes commencent déjà à expérimenter des projets de ce type. L’intérêt est également fort dans d’autres réalités européennes (Allemagne et Espagne) mais pas seulement (Canada et Hong Kong) !

 

Qui aurait dit, il y a encore peu de temps, que la ville du futur serait verte et non grise, avec des fruits et légumes à chaque angle à la place de machines volantes ?
