Foucault and social media: life in a virtual panopticon

Foucault and social media: life in a virtual panopticon | Jacobean Visions | Scoop.it

By making our actions and shares visible to a crowd, social media exposes us to a kind of virtual Panopticon. This is not just because our activities are monitored and recorded by the social media service for the purposes of producing market analysis or generating targeted advertising. For the most part, we can and do ignore this kind of data harvesting. The surveillance that directly affects us and impacts on our behaviour comes from the people with whom we share.

There are no guards and no prisoners in Facebook’s virtual Panopticon. We are both guards and prisoners, watching and implicitly judging one another as we share content.

Each month, we plan to bring you an insight into the indoor Jacobean theatre, from the history of indoor playing to discussions about candlelight to interviews with the project team about the construction process. In this first post, Dr Farah Karim-Cooper, our Head of Courses & Research, explains why the story of Shakespeare’s playhouses is incomplete without this indoor playing space...

THE DUCHESS OF MALFI

THE DUCHESS OF MALFI | Jacobean Visions | Scoop.it
Wallbyrd Theatre Company is thrilled to present John Webster’s macabre
revenge tragedy THE DUCHESS OF MALFI October 15th-24th at the MUCCC Theater
in Rochester.  This visually stunning production will cast Webster's
classic tragedy in a new light as the show comes to life against the
backdrop of the sweeping, war torn landscape of the American Civil War.

Tickets Available soon Synopsis

Defying the wishes of her two brothers, the newly widowed Duchess of Malfi
is quick to secretly marry her true love and steward, Antonio.  When their
illicit union is finally discovered, it will unleash a reign of terror,
cruelty, madness, and murder that will tear country and kin to the ground.
First performed by Shakespeare’s own company, the King's Men in 1614, this
Jacobean classic has been heralded among the most grotesque, whirlwind
thrillers of the English theater, composed with a poetic elegance and
nuance to rival the bard himself.

In keeping with the company's mission to explore “living classics," this
production has been re-imagined, combining Webster’s expressive and
eloquent verse with the raw, war-ravaged setting of the 1860’s antebellum
south.  In doing so, this production will explore how race, class, gender,
and culture defined and defied a tumultuous period in American history.
Due to the complexity and sheer scale of this work, this is a rare chance
to see one of Webster’s most acclaimed masterpieces embodied on the
American stage.

Inside The Globe's New Candlelit Theatre | Londonist

Inside The Globe's New Candlelit Theatre | Londonist | Jacobean Visions | Scoop.it

We know Shakespeare’s Globe as the big open-air theatre in Southwark, home to bold and bawdy plays with space for 700 people jostling in the pit just as they would have in Tudor times. But now the theatre’s commitment to exploring dramatic history has gone one step further with the opening of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, an indoor space based around plans for a Jacobean theatre which were discovered in the 1960s...  [click headline for more]

Jacobean tragedy: of love and death

Jacobean tragedy: of love and death | Jacobean Visions | Scoop.it
With new productions of The Changeling and The Duchess of Malfi about to open, it seems we can't get enough of revenge tragedies.

In a hushed, darkened room inside London's Young Vic theatre, two young people are about to make a terrible mistake. The woman has just been married off to someone she doesn't love; the man is desperate for the two of them to be together. Perhaps, he suggests, he could confront her husband. She recoils: too public. Too liable to go wrong. If only there were another way.

Anyone who's read or seen The Postman Always Rings Twice knows what happens next: the husband winds up dead. But this isn't James M Cain – it's a rehearsal for Middleton and Rowley's 17th-century thriller The Changeling; and, much more gruesomely, this will be the first murder of many...
