University. School. Death of the textbook? So where sits the library?

University. School. Death of the textbook? So where sits the library? | iThink, therefore iPad | Scoop.it
63% of college students and 69% of high school students believe that traditional textbooks will be phased out in the next five years.

Via Anne Whisken
Sue Osborne's insight:

The Library sits in the middle, assisting the student in acessing the digital content and teaching the critical thinking skills required to navigate such content. Also, in helping students group together content and resources in a coherent, relevant way. Libraries will do what they have always done - adapt. Books are books, regardless of format. Now is the time for libraries to take themselves to the students, rather than waiting for the students to come to them. The "right now" library service is the way of the future, but there is always a curation and dissemination role too if we put ourselves at the front line (instead of in the back room).

Should libraries continue to stock 'copies' of textbooks?  Guess it must be open-source, or whole site licence?

Anne Whisken's comment, July 7, 2013 6:27 PM
Great summary Sue. Where do you see the concept of 'reference desk' sitting in the future school library?

‘Why I quit Apple’ — what it’s really like to work for Apple

‘Why I quit Apple’ — what it’s really like to work for Apple | iThink, therefore iPad | Scoop.it
I’VE just escaped the Apple institution. I’ve sent in my resignation, and fled down its bright white corridors curated by crass colourful pictures of iPhones past. I handed in my security pass and in return I was able to re-claim my creativity, individuality and free thinking from the secure Apple cloak room. For the first time in two years I feel light, creative and inspired.
Sue Osborne's insight:

This no surprise to me at all....and this is the technology and the company that many educational instiutions are betting on to "take" them somewhere in the future.  It's a worry....

So sensible to teach typing, but I find children who can write cursive can read it.  It will be a pity to loose the ability to read old text, e.g. a letter from Granny!

Moving to a one-to-one computer program will likely get school districts headlines in local newspapers, but school leaders need emphasize more than the new tech’s bells and whistles. Engaged learning is the real goal. Remember that better education is the red thread in any new technology story.

I just had to scoop this!  This really showcases why the Informational Technology expert needs to have a great relationship with the Instructional Technology expert.

I see this conflict in my own district.  The two remain isolated and with very different philosophies and rollout plans it becomes quite difficult to facilitate moving forward.

I am excited to share this with my superintendent and the technology committee so we may begin to understand the need to bridge this gap.
