Peter Shanks's insight:

The bottom line, Abbott notes, is that the current system excels at preparing children to be dependent “customers,” so if we hope to instead create a world of responsible, community-minded adults, we need to overhaul the educational paradigm. That means replacing the metaphor — the concept of the world and its inhabitants as machine-like entities — that has shaped the education system, as well as many other aspects of our culture

Research Confirms Video Improves Learning Results

Research Confirms Video Improves Learning Results | iThinks and the Making Movement | Scoop.it
If you want to improve the way students learn, retain, and eventually practice what you preach, alternative teaching styles should be considered....
Peter Shanks's insight:

On the student side of things, video may be the best way to improve learning styles, especially when it comes to remembering key facts and figures. Forrester Research estimatesone minute of online video equates to approximately 1.8 million written words. In addition, 90 percent of information transmitted to the brain is visual, and visuals are processed 60,000 times faster in the brain than text. This indicates visual education aids like video can improve learning styles and increase the rate at which we retain information.

Peter Shanks's insight:

"As the semantic web finally starts to form and common ontologies for various types of learning content are developed, intelligent personal learning software agents will emerge as learning content mediators. Having a software agent that runs on a personal computing device such as a mobile phone or tablet and constantly monitors content streams on the internet to provide up-to-date information based on personal preferences, workplace conditions, or for the task at hand will make a good performance support and learning assistance system."

It's kind of a sobering thought that mobile communications, the cornerstone of the modern world in both developed and developing regions, pivots around software that is of dubious quality, poorly understood, entirely proprietary, and wholly insecure by design.

Are screens rotting our brains?

Are screens rotting our brains? | iThinks and the Making Movement | Scoop.it
Neuroscientist Baroness Susan Greenfield compares time spent using screens with smoking. But society doesn't seem to be listening.
Peter Shanks's insight:

Susan Greenfield recalls a breakfast meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, at which she observed that one person attending was so busy tweeting about being there she was not paying attention to the meeting itself.

"We are living online, offline," says the professor.

"We are reporting what we're doing, not actually having the experience."

Ultimately, the baroness argues that society needs to put technology "back in its place".

"Old technology was a means to an end - a car was designed to get you from A to B, a television was there to entertain the family," she says.

"Now the cyber-lifestyle is an end in itself."

Don't write off Microsoft's chances in mobile just yet. It may still be struggling to make itself count in the smartphone space but early signs are more promising for Windows plus tablets.

Optimal Video Length for Student Engagement | edX

Optimal Video Length for Student Engagement | edX | iThinks and the Making Movement | Scoop.it
Peter Shanks's insight:

The optimal video length is 6 minutes or shorter -- students watched most of the way through these short videos. In fact, the average engagement time of any video maxes out at 6 minutes, regardless of its length. And engagement times decrease as videos lengthen: For instance, on average students spent around 3 minutes on videos that are longer than 12 minutes, which means that they engaged with less than a quarter of the content. Finally, certificate-earning students engaged more with videos, presumably because they had greater motivation to learn the material.

The irony is that the company that this super-hacker co-founded would evolve into the company that’s evolving toward unhackable products. (You can still jailbreak an iPhone, but for how long?)
