Venice, Italy: A Boat Tour of the Lagoon

Cradled by the lagoon, north of Venice, are a string of low-lying islands which make a nice escape from the hubbub of the city. Water taxis zip quickly from island to island, while regular ferryboats connect Venice with neighboring lagoon communities in a more relaxed and less expensive way. We visit Murano, known for glass, and Burano, with its lace and photogenic pastel houses.

Three and half days in Venice | Europe Forum | Fodor's Travel Talk Forums

I would like some help in planning our 3.5 days in Venice in June. We will be arriving on a Friday at 4 pm and leaving Tuesday at 9 Am. We ere traveling with our 2 daughters (18 &22). We are staying in an apartment in Dorsoduro. We are the type of people that love to walk around and really get the feel of the place. I need help planning our itinerary. Friday afternoon by the time we get to our place I though just go out and walk around Dorsoduro and find a place to eat. Any restaurant recommendations ( $60-70 euros max for 4) or a good pizza place will be great. Is Saturday a good day to to to St. Marks Basilica or shall we wait for Monday? If that is the case I would love to go to Burano (do we spend one day there or do we hop to the other islands like Murano & Torcello? Sunday walk around the neighborhoods like Cannaregio, Castello and just stop wherever we feel like it. Restaurant recommendations?? Monday: St Mark's and surrounding areas if we did not go on Saturday. I have seen tha Posted in the Europe forum
Joshua Ledwell's insight:

Great overall list of tips including:

- 3.5 days is too short if you've visiting Burano, that's a day trip

- Watch out for poor quality guided tours of the Basilica

- Wandering around is the best (wear good shoes) but ...

- Don't just sit down and eat any old place if you want to stay on budget.

Mariano Pallottini's curator insight, October 4, 2013 12:47 PM

As the "bible" of Italian manners "Il Galateo", first published in 1558, is now out in a new translation by M. F. Rusnak (University of Chicago Press), Italy Magazine editor Katia Amore explains Italian etiquette so, next time you visit Italy, you will be sure to make the bella figura!

Discerning travellers are always concerned about getting the right information about the country they have planned to visit in order to avoid problems of all sorts once they get there, and this is the case even when planning to come to Italy. This is why you can find so many articles explaining what to do and what to avoid doing when you visit Il Bel Paese. Many of these articles are actually dedicated to general behaviour...

Glass blowing is a lovely art. Great idea to invite artists to Venice's Murano to learn how to work with the material. Italy is known for its top quality designs. China will always corner the market on cheap disposible goods. While Italy should always own the market on high quality fashionable designs that last a lifetime.  One of the highlights of a Italy tour to Venice is visiting Murano. http://italiantourism.us/rome-florence-venice-vacation-package/

Murano - Venice

Murano - Venice | Italian Eurotrip 2014 | Scoop.it

We took the vaporetto or water bus to the island of Murano which is north of Venice. About a 30 minute ride on the vaporetto from San Marco.

Murano is the most famous of the Venetian Islands , and the most visited due to the famous glass-works that produce the popular “Murano Glass”.

On arrival to Murano we visited a glass making factory and watched the glass products being made.

From there, we wandered in to the main area of Murano where the shops, cafes and restaurants are all built around the canal.

Murano is such a gorgeous town with so many colourful buildings.[...]

Some of the companies that own historical glass factories in Murano are among the most important brands of glass in the world. Today, to protect the original Murano Glass art from foreign markets, the most famous Glass Factories of this island have a Trade mark that certifies products in glass made in the island of Murano.

Today, the artisans of Murano still employ these centuries-old techniques, crafting everything from contemporary art glass and glass jewelry to Murano glass chandeliers and wine stoppers.
