The transform tool in Photoshop comes with various features. This tool is used by designers for resizing, reshaping, moving and rotating various images and objects within layers. In this tutorial, we will try to understand how these things can be done with a simple picture which you can see below:
It is important to note that the transform tool will react only when it is used on an active layer (which can be seen as highlighted layer in your Photoshop window).
Select free transform tool from the edit button tool:
You can also select the transform tool by selecting Ctrl+T (Win) / Command+T (T for Transform).
The area highlighted in red circles can be resized, rotated and dragged to give various shapes as per the designer’s requirement.
For example, we can increase width of the shape by selecting any point in right or left side. See the image below for your reference:
Dragging the image from either left or right side will only extend that side. But if you will select Alt (Win) option and then drag, the image will reshape itself right from the centre.
Any shape can be resized by selecting any icon (red circle) and dragging it like shown in below picture:
We do not require dragging to rotate the images in transform tool. When we will click outside boundary of the shape, a small arrow will appear which can be adjusted to rotate the shape.
The target point of the shape can also be shifted, so that further dragging and resizing takes place from a different centre.
To move any shape, just click inside the shape excluding the target point and drag on to move the shape.
Some more transform Options in Photoshop:
Although free transform tool is of great help but Adobe offers more options for you to work on shapes. For using these, simply click on edit and select Transform.
If you are working with free transform tool, then you can access the options listed above just by selecting right click (Win) / Control –Click (Mac) anywhere inside the document.
Select ‘Skew’ option from the right click and then drag right side icon, the image will be tilted while keeping the sides parallel. Repeat same process with the left side to skew the image. It will appear something like this:
You can also switch to the skew, perspective and distort mode by using the shortcut keys while using free transform tool.
Skew or distort Mode = Ctrl (Win) / Command (Mac)
Perspective Mode = Shift + Ctrl + Alt (Win) / Shift + Command + Option (Mac)
When you have finished resizing, distorting or any kind of transformation with the image, press Enter (Win) / Return (Mac) to accept the transformation and exit out of the image.
If you are not satisfied with the changes, simply select Esc to move out without accepting the changes.
