From CO2 to Valuable Carbon Nanofibers

From CO2 to Valuable Carbon Nanofibers | Water technology, Renewable Energy and Real Sustainable Solutions to Join | Scoop.it
High Potential Research: technology converts CO2 (directly from the air) into highly valued carbon nanofibers for industrial and consumer products.
Tanja's insight:
CO2 to Carbon Nanofibers processTo power the syntheses, heat and electricity are produced through a hybrid and extremely efficient concentrating solar-energy system.
The system focuses the sun’s rays on a photovoltaic solar cell to generate electricity and on a second system to generate heat and thermal energy, which raises the temperature of an electrolytic cell.CO2 is broken down in a high-temperature electrolytic bath of molten carbonates at 1,380 degrees F (750 degrees C).Atmospheric air is added to an electrolytic cell. The CO2 dissolves when subjected to the heat and direct current through electrodes of nickel and steel. The carbon nanofibers build up on the steel electrode, where they can be removed.

The world could be 100% renewable by 2050 | Water technology, Renewable Energy and Real Sustainable Solutions to Join | Scoop.it
A new study by Stanford University’s Atmosphere/Energy Program makes the case that the world could be fully powered by renewable energy as early as 2050 by detailing the necessary resources for each country.
Tanja's insight:

Green, renewable energy will reduce risks and has a lot of benefits:

Adoption of a global green energy infrastructure would provide power to 4 billion! peopleThe energy independence of countries would eliminate a major cause of global conflictDecentralizing power would reduce the danger posed by terrorism and lower the risk of outages by stormAs for the added benefits to health and climate, the study estimates that widespread use renewables would save 4 to 7 million lives a year of people who would have died from air pollutionGreen energy sources would lead to a stabilization of energy prices, since renewables are not dependent on a commodity fueland would create some 20 million more jobs than those lost in the fossil fuel sector

Tanja's insight:

For most companies, the energy bill is so substantial that it is worth to pay attention to energy consumption. Yet energy savings are seldom a priority in asset management and resource planning.

In most cases, the 2% goal of energy savings is not translated the project level, such as purchase of new equipmentFor projects, there are no resources allocated to energy: Leading motifs are usually lowering costs and increasing safety, quality and reliability, ECN writes in the report.
