Democrats Fighting for Net Neutrality While Republicans Seek to End ‘Open’ Internet

Democrats Fighting for Net Neutrality While Republicans Seek to End ‘Open’ Internet | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
Yesterday, Democrats continued the fight for net neutrality by introducing the Open Internet Preservation Act. If passed, this bill would at least temporarily restore the net neutrality lost last month.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Let our Republicans and any doubting Democrats know that only people that stand for a open internet WITH the people will be left standing FOR the people! Anyone else will be viewed as standing against the interest of the people of this nation! Our voice matters and we will keep expressing it on our vast internet communication system.

We all helped build it with our taxes, our customer payments, our massive attention of uploading, sharing, coding, developing, marketing and expression. We are all stake holders. Anyone that doesn't get that is just to brain dead to serve as a public servant or representative! Call up  and let them know in large numbers...

We will not have our communication services and thus our own voice controlled by telcoms, and cable companies. We seek to have them unchartered and replaced with businesses we caan trust to deliver what we pay them to do. They work for us or we cancel our deal to let them offer the services. They do not own our air waves, our shared grounds and waterways or our machines in our home we allow them to enter our homes and our lives through.

Q. I'm paying too much for too little — almost $200 for cable, Internet and phone. How can I cut those costs?

A. You're definitely overpaying, and you're not alone: I've heard this lament from many people, up to and including my own mother.

Your easiest and first option should be to threaten to fire your current service, then see what kind of a discount it offers you to stay. If it isn't sufficiently generous — as in, compare its proposed price break to the deals its site touts for new subscribers— it's time to look for alternatives and then make good on your threat.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

If citizens in a community decide they want to use their funds and taxes for the purpose of a broadband that is public there is no reason to make that illegal any more than if a rich guy or guys came to town that owned ATT or a Cable company to sale the same services should be illegal as long as the service is good for the public and consumers. Very fishy law to try to pass as corporations try to set up a coup to turn the internet into the old blah sponsored models.

I bet ALEC law makers are at work on this or maybe the money cable companies are donating is enough for the bribe. Why are we not firing people and locking them up when they try to undermine people? The good folks of Kansa should do a non-profit co-op industry to provide broadband services and then they can still own and control their own broadband even if this corrupt law is passed.

Back to the Digital Drawing Board

Back to the Digital Drawing Board | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
The F.C.C.’s approach to net neutrality is dead, and that’s a good thing. (Back to the Digital Drawing Board, via @nytimes. Easy to restore net neutrality, FCC. Common carrier now.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Are there not laws that can be enforced for people that have serious or even criminal conflict of issue situations and use connection and influence to make huge personal gains from corrupt connections that play favorites? We know there are!

So let's demand our internet providers are considered common carriers and regulated as common carriers. Powell went straight to work for those he regulated as other shave done. The new Chairman of the FCC comes from the industries he is now is to regulate. We need to make sure the FCC remembers they are there to ensure corporations stay in line with what is good and fair for the communities, the nation and the consumers as citizens as well as customers.

Excerpt:

The problem began in 2002, when Michael K. Powell, the F.C.C. chairman who now heads the cable industry’s trade association, decided to exempt high-speed Internet access from so-called common carriage regulation. Those rules, applied most notably to phone service, bar providers from discriminatory service — everyone who pays a phone bill gets the same quality of service.

But Mr. Powell reasoned that Internet access was an information service, distinct from the traditional communications infrastructure, and that competition would be better than oversight at protecting Americans from any abuses by access providers.

It’s a good thing the F.C.C. is staffed by so many lawyers, because it was soon faced with complaints by consumer groups and Internet content providers alleging that companies like Comcast, far from being checked by competition, were using the lack of competition in local Internet service, combined with the lack of oversight, to favor their own commercial interests.

Make ISPs into "common carriers," says former FCC commissioner | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

We need more people like Cobbs on the FCC and also in all public servant positions all the way to the white house. Too many leave to be lobbist and cut deals for those same groups while in public service  after coming from the industries they regulate others go to work with those they regulate soon after they are regulators.

by Jon Brodkin - Jan 24 2014, 11:50am EST

It's time for the Federal Communications Commission to correct its past mistakes and get tough on broadband providers, a retired FCC commissioner says.

Michael Copps, an FCC commissioner from 2001 to 2011 (and acting chairman for several months in 2009), is proof that not every former FCC member becomes a lobbyist for the industries the commission regulates. The only commission member to vote against allowing the Comcast/NBC Universal merger, Copps is now a self-described public interest advocate who leads the Media and Democracy Reform Initiative at Common Cause.

Greg Russak's curator insight, February 4, 2014 11:00 PM

"The good news is that the solution is pretty simple," Copps wrote. "It doesn’t require a new telecommunications statute replete with time-consuming years of legislative horse-trading and special interest lobbying. All it requires is an FCC big enough to own up to its previous mistakes and courageous enough to put our communications future back on track." - Michael Copps, an FCC commissioner from 2001 to 2011 and now a self-described public interest advocate who leads the Media and Democracy Reform Initiative at Common Cause.

Monica S Mcfeeters's curator insight, February 5, 2014 12:49 AM

We need more people like Cobbs on the FCC and he is so right to call for the openness of the internet to be enforced.

Disruptions: Paying to Travel in the Internet's Fast Lanes
New York Times (blog)
For a subject that sounds mind-numbingly dull, “network neutrality” is the most important issue facing the Internet since, well, the Internet.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

Count on it: This battle isn’t over yet. On Friday, President Obama said the F.C.C. was considering an appeal with the goal of maintaining “a free and open Internet.”

The premise behind net neutrality goes back to the days of the telegraph. Even then, everything moved at pretty much the same speed. Since the 1970s, the F.C.C. has prevented telecommunications companies from playing favorites on long-distance telephone lines. And it’s not as if your electric company charges you one rate for the electricity to power your refrigerator and another for the electricity to use a washing machine — or offer special, high-price options to those who want power during shutdowns.

Keep them coming.

Coffee Party USA's curator insight, February 1, 2014 12:09 PM

One of the best ways we can all keep our voices heard is to ensure our media services are not controlled by a few.

We need to fight just as hard as citizens to make sure that old style of media controlled by the few and the rich does not corrupt the influences and connectedness of the internet and our modern communication networks as those with money and power are fighting to get their way with it and us.

Without the balancing, citizen push back the others dancing on the planet floor knock us off our feet and out of the dance. Let’s stay in the dance and stay connected!

We need to win on this one and stay connected to ensure success with any other fights yet to come.  I don't know what it sounds like if a tree falls when no one can hear it....but I do know what happens if the cititzens and individuals of communities cannot be heard and connected. Even if we have to build our own public internet and communication system as suggested by Susan Crawford, to avoid one that becomes corrupted by the influence and designs of too few, then that is what we should do! Why do we charter companies that really are not operating in our best interest as a nation unless we decide it’s just their nation anyway and we are content to be allowed to live in only a tiny back room somewhere in their nation , out of sight and unimportant? We must stay on our feet, alert and stay in the dance!
