Reddit, Mozilla, Tumblr, Imgur, and over 6,000 other websites are protesting NSA surveillance. Join them.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

The calls are easy. Some EFF  links even do the dial up to all reps while you wait to be connected and speak your mind or read the script.

Excerpt from site:

As your constituent, I am deeply concerned about the National Security Agency’s (NSA) mass surveillance programs. We need real reform to stop the NSA's mass collection of our information.

I urge you to support the USA Freedom Act (H.R. 3361/S. 1599), an important first step in stopping mass spying, reforming the FISA court, and increasing transparency. But reform shouldn't stop there: please push for stronger privacy protections that stop dragnet surveillance of innocent users across the globe, and stop the NSA from sabotaging international encryption standards.

I'm also urging you to oppose S. 1631, the so-called FISA Improvements Act. This bill aims to entrench some of the worst forms of NSA surveillance and extend the NSA surveillance programs in unprecedented ways. It would allow the NSA to continue to collect the phone records of hundreds of millions of Americans not suspected of any crime—a program I absolutely oppose—and could

Back to the Digital Drawing Board

Back to the Digital Drawing Board | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
The F.C.C.’s approach to net neutrality is dead, and that’s a good thing. (Back to the Digital Drawing Board, via @nytimes. Easy to restore net neutrality, FCC. Common carrier now.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Are there not laws that can be enforced for people that have serious or even criminal conflict of issue situations and use connection and influence to make huge personal gains from corrupt connections that play favorites? We know there are!

So let's demand our internet providers are considered common carriers and regulated as common carriers. Powell went straight to work for those he regulated as other shave done. The new Chairman of the FCC comes from the industries he is now is to regulate. We need to make sure the FCC remembers they are there to ensure corporations stay in line with what is good and fair for the communities, the nation and the consumers as citizens as well as customers.

Excerpt:

The problem began in 2002, when Michael K. Powell, the F.C.C. chairman who now heads the cable industry’s trade association, decided to exempt high-speed Internet access from so-called common carriage regulation. Those rules, applied most notably to phone service, bar providers from discriminatory service — everyone who pays a phone bill gets the same quality of service.

But Mr. Powell reasoned that Internet access was an information service, distinct from the traditional communications infrastructure, and that competition would be better than oversight at protecting Americans from any abuses by access providers.

It’s a good thing the F.C.C. is staffed by so many lawyers, because it was soon faced with complaints by consumer groups and Internet content providers alleging that companies like Comcast, far from being checked by competition, were using the lack of competition in local Internet service, combined with the lack of oversight, to favor their own commercial interests.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Here is  a nice review of Scoop.it. If you are at this link you already have some exposure to scoop.it. This is a great curating tool and I have tried several. The only compliant I get is from people trying to access what I post to read. Which matters because I do spend time and now even some funds to curate about things that matter. I have placed that concern through the feedback system and they normally get back to me quickly on things of concern. Hopefully there will be an answer to that question soon. It seems to come mainly from some trying to access the link from Facebook, so it may be a Facebook issue.

China says Kerry's call for Internet freedom naive

China says Kerry's call for Internet freedom naive | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
BEIJING (Reuters) - China criticized U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday for his naive call for more Internet freedom in the country, and wondered why his discussion with Chinese bloggers had
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

by Ben Blanchard

"If China's Internet had not gone through enormous development in the past few years then where would these bloggers have come from?" she told a daily news briefing.

"China's affairs must be decided by Chinese people based on their own national condition. Using methods like this to push China in a direction of change they want, isn't that rather naive?" Hua added.

"I think the topic of this discussion could have been even more open, for example discussing Snowden's case and issues like that," she said, referring to the former U.S. National Security Agency contractor whose leaks have embarrassed Washington.

Last year, China's Communist Party renewed a heavy-handed campaign to control online interaction, threatening legal action against people whose perceived rumors on microblogs such as Sina Weibo are reposted more than 500 times or seen by more than 5,000 people.

Rights groups and dissidents have criticized the crackdown as another tool for the party to limit criticism and to further control freedom of expression.

Wolverton: Comcast-Time Warner deal would be bad news for consumers and ...
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

By Troy Wolverton,

At first glance, Comcast's proposed merger with Time Warner Cable may not look like it would matter much to the Bay Area, since only Comcast is available here. But the deal is bad news for both local Comcast customers and for Silicon Valley's Internet companies.

The merger would not only unite the nation's two largest cable companies, but also would create a behemoth that would control the lion's share of pay TV and the high-speed Internet market, a fact that's drawn less attention in the wake of the deal's announcement. With that power, the company could jack up prices and thwart innovation with impunity. Worse, it could control not only what television networks you can access, but also what Internet sites you can visit and applications you can use.

"The Internet is such an amazing source of innovation, free speech and democratic participation, and suddenly Comcast becomes a gatekeeper for a lot of that," said Craig Aaron, CEO of Free Press, a consumer advocacy group. "The idea that we would give over all this power to a single company should be unthinkable."

Democrats Fighting for Net Neutrality While Republicans Seek to End ‘Open’ Internet

Democrats Fighting for Net Neutrality While Republicans Seek to End ‘Open’ Internet | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
Yesterday, Democrats continued the fight for net neutrality by introducing the Open Internet Preservation Act. If passed, this bill would at least temporarily restore the net neutrality lost last month.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Let our Republicans and any doubting Democrats know that only people that stand for a open internet WITH the people will be left standing FOR the people! Anyone else will be viewed as standing against the interest of the people of this nation! Our voice matters and we will keep expressing it on our vast internet communication system.

We all helped build it with our taxes, our customer payments, our massive attention of uploading, sharing, coding, developing, marketing and expression. We are all stake holders. Anyone that doesn't get that is just to brain dead to serve as a public servant or representative! Call up  and let them know in large numbers...

We will not have our communication services and thus our own voice controlled by telcoms, and cable companies. We seek to have them unchartered and replaced with businesses we caan trust to deliver what we pay them to do. They work for us or we cancel our deal to let them offer the services. They do not own our air waves, our shared grounds and waterways or our machines in our home we allow them to enter our homes and our lives through.
