Berners-Lee Calls for Bill of Rights for the Web

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Here Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the WEB, speaks for himself… HE HOPES WE ARE LISTENING AND TAKING THIS TO HEART I"M SURE! This is why he didn't patent the WEB for billions. HE MEANT FOR IT TO BE OURS>>>EVERYONE'S WEB!

Excerpt:

Speaking on the 25th anniversary of the world wide web, Tim Berners-Lee, web inventor and an outspoken critic of spy agencies' surveillance of citizens, said an online "Magna Carta" is needed to protect and enshrine the independence of the medium he created and the rights of its users worldwide.

"Unless we have an open, neutral internet we can rely on without worrying about what's happening at the back door, we can't have open government, good democracy, good healthcare, connected communities and diversity of culture. It's not naive to think we can have that, but it is naive to think we can just sit back and get it."

This was and still is the intent of the man that designed the Web and didn't patent it for billions. When you have someone like this and other major players as well saying we cannot at this point trust any country (including this one) or corporation with an unprotected Internet that speaks volumes. The rest of us better pay attention and step up on this.  Only we are a force big enough to make this happen. We need a bill of rights for the WEB,  "A Magna Carta".  Bills like that have always been achieved only through the full weight of a society actively seeking to shape their destiny.

The FCC is likely to pass net neutrality rules Thursday, but Republicans and telecoms will fight on.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

The war is still on.... stay alert..... the ISPs and the money party see dollar signs and power... so what is the best way to get our selves free of snapping hungry turtles? Call your ISP and tell them what you think for one and representatives too.... Learn the issue fully from both sides before you do that and plan on reoccurring battles because power and wealth are a thing ISPs and these officials will never stop seeking full control

Advocates for pay-TV providers are saying the FCC should use Section 706 to act more aggressively against the companies that produce TV content.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This is worth reading... not sure why this would be bad.... sounds like the middle men selling video content might not get to be so rich but it sounds like the rest of us would have better options including independent film makers that will continue to be able to compete with net neutrality still in place. As far as I can tell the last minute amendment was not attached though as I read over what was passed.... but it is still good to think about this idea
