Make ISPs into "common carriers," says former FCC commissioner | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
Not every former FCC member is a telco industry lobbyist.

Via Coffee Party USA, Monica S Mcfeeters
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

We need more people like Cobbs on the FCC and also in all public servant positions all the way to the white house. Too many leave to be lobbist and cut deals for those same groups while in public service  after coming from the industries they regulate others go to work with those they regulate soon after they are regulators.

by Jon Brodkin - Jan 24 2014, 11:50am EST

It's time for the Federal Communications Commission to correct its past mistakes and get tough on broadband providers, a retired FCC commissioner says.

Michael Copps, an FCC commissioner from 2001 to 2011 (and acting chairman for several months in 2009), is proof that not every former FCC member becomes a lobbyist for the industries the commission regulates. The only commission member to vote against allowing the Comcast/NBC Universal merger, Copps is now a self-described public interest advocate who leads the Media and Democracy Reform Initiative at Common Cause.

Greg Russak's curator insight, February 4, 11:00 PM

"The good news is that the solution is pretty simple," Copps wrote. "It doesn’t require a new telecommunications statute replete with time-consuming years of legislative horse-trading and special interest lobbying. All it requires is an FCC big enough to own up to its previous mistakes and courageous enough to put our communications future back on track." - Michael Copps, an FCC commissioner from 2001 to 2011 and now a self-described public interest advocate who leads the Media and Democracy Reform Initiative at Common Cause.

Monica S Mcfeeters's curator insight, February 5, 12:49 AM

We need more people like Cobbs on the FCC and he is so right to call for the openness of the internet to be enforced.

Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

So who do you believe? Who do you really trust your ISPs and or do you trust a man who invented the most amazing communication connection in history and didn't patent it to make himself the total controller of his inventions as Jobs, Gates and others did or to become disgustingly rich and powerful?  Or do you trust a man who used is invite to as a guest at the London Olympics to send the people of the world a message.  Jul 27, 2012 - During the opening ceremonies of the 2012 London Olympics, Sir Tim had a clear message to share with the world – This is for everyone. The world would be an amazing place if everyone had his heart!

Please join the fight to be among those that are fighting to protect and preserve the openness and connectedness of his gift to humanity. We do not want his thoughtful gift to become a corrupted curse. The WEB is for us but like all things that come to us in life it needs to be protected, shared properly with people, and sometimes fought for to keep the hands of those that wish to steal it or do harm and corrupt our connections to one another.

PBS News Hour Covers Big Money In Politics More Than All Other Networks Combined

PBS News Hour Covers Big Money In Politics More Than All Other Networks Combined | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

How come no one ever of hears anything that matters from commercial sponsored media other than more about vaginal mesh, and Johnny-be-Ready for action like you were twenty pills, Progressive insurance and All State and a million drugs greatness and forced details of their harm? That would be because these networks work for the interest of the sponsors profits and not for or to inform citizens  in democracy.

First thing mass media fails to report is how the FCC has been used for at least16 years or far more as a place to put commissioners that are no more than payback positions to the very rich and powerful or their family members for campaign donations/support and to protect very high officials from the threat of media ruin or semi-blackout if they fail to clear a path for the media giants to suck money and power from the public. This is the purpose of placing these corrupted commissioners into such positions as things have proved out in the past.  Some commissioners have arrived only to succumb to bribes such as great future jobs within in industries we are paying them to watch over for behavior and to create policy in regards to those industries that insures they are acting in the best interest of the citizens of the nation and the Law.

This is one of the most critical commissions we have. The FCC,  along with congress controls whether or not we have wide, fair and open freedom of expression and the information sources allowed and available  to us that help inform us enough to make wise decisions as individuals and as citizens in a community and nation. Corrupted this commission can allow these industries to twist the truth and block it for corruption of democracy in the name of profits for the few that helped them get the job mainly to ensure they were protected from public knowledge rather than the public protected from misused and delivered media services. A short look at Tom Wheeler's background confirm this. Why would a man that has always been into making himself rich no matter what suddenly become a "Public Servant " for far less annual salary?
