FCC Chairman Pai Gets an “F” for Fake History of Broadband: Ever Hear of TeleKansas? | Bruce Kushnick Blog | HuffPost.com | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it

Did you ever hear of TeleKansas I and II, the plan to wire Kansas high schools, colleges, universities and hospitals with fiber optics, starting in 1994? This was on top of the hype by now-AT&T to bring fiber optic wires to homes and businesses, especially in rural areas, replacing the aging copper wires. And did you know customers were charged in multiple ways for these upgrades via state laws that were changed multiple times as part of TeleKansas? And maybe you haven’t heard that FCC Chairman Ajit Pai comes from rural Kansas and never mentioned any of this, as far as we can tell, ever.

On April 20th, 2017, the FCC, led by Chairman Pai, is planning on doing a hatchet job that guts consumer protections, blocks competition, and allows for monopoly rate increases of business data services, among other ill conceived acts.

Point of fact, what follows details how Fake History is being used to create harmful public policies. History is supposedly written by the winners; this means we lost unless we take actions to stop it.

Net neutrality protestors just Rickrolled the FCC’s monthly meeting | Jacob Kastrenakes | The Verge | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it

The Federal Communications Commission is holding its monthly meeting right now to vote on a handful of new proposals. But right in the middle of one of FCC chairman Ajit Pai’s first speeches, the room broke out on song — he was Rickrolled.

The singing came from a group of protestors organized by Free Press, who were there to demand continued support for net neutrality. They put an extremely nerdy twist on Rick Astley’s lyrics — “a common carrier’s what we’re thinking of / we wouldn’t sing this to any other Pai” — before being escorted out by security.

janlgordon's curator insight, April 5, 2:05 AM

I selected this article from Curatti written by Alice Elliott because she explains how to write a blog post that is more readable.

Attract more readers with content that it suitable to them.

How to Create an Attractive Post

It's great to have a strong number of subscribers -- but you need strong content to go along with that. I agree that your audience needs to be both educated and entertained in order to capture their attention.

Elliott explains how to improve your articles and write the perfect post.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • The quality of your writing needs to be the best that it can be. You need to write what your audience wants to read in order to retain them.

  • Make your blog posts conversational style. Show your own personality in an authentic way to attract more readers. Include your own anecdotes and stories to keep their interest.

  • A good post contains value and is useful to the reader. Write something that can make a real difference in their lives.

The FCC is about to unveil its net neutrality rollback plan

The FCC is about to unveil its net neutrality rollback plan | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
There's another battle ahead between tech companies and Internet service providers over the future of the Web.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:
The Republican Congress sold your privacy and 4th amendment to their big donors in the telecom industry. Now it is time to let the same group rule and control the internet...Welcome to pay wall, new cable model, internet service of tomorrow. How do you stop this?.... Join  millions others to say  "no way" loud and clear this time..... If you want someone to look out for your interest than you best do it....Don't trust the guy in this picture Trump put in place over the FCC.... We don't pay him as much as Verizon did and he isn't a tech guy nor is he our friend or federal servant...He is business as usual for rip off internet service providers and telecoms.

if the push back won't work because too many sit out of the push back to prevent this then there is always Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, Republican from Wis. point. "You don't have to use the internet you choose to". Sort of like telling an abused wife or child that it's their own fault and they deserve what happens to them rather than locking up the abuser. We could roll this family structure back to the good old days and once again treat women and children as pretty much the property of the husband and put them back under that control whether the husband is abusive or a dud wouldn't matter....we don't belive that is a good idea these days and nor should we just sit down and take what these companies want to dish out to us..... Think about it.....WE ARE PAYiNG THEM ALL TO SERVE OUR INTEREST.....AND WE NEED TO FIRE THEM AND QUIT DOING BUSINESS WITH THEM IF THEY ARE NOT!!!! WHY WOULD WE HAND THEM OUR 4th AMENDMENT privacy protection and control over our communications online so they could charge us even more, manipulate everyone the can by controlling the message and images everyone sees and hears, and shut us up too with paywalls many, or even most, could not afford.

Joining millions of others in calling this Verizon lawyer and mainly Republicans and telecoms out for his plan to reward his former and maybe future employer by gifting them control over our internet can work...and has in the past....If you could stand up for or against guns, or any other cause that matters to you than  you better stand up for the internet neutrality or forever sit down and shut up because that is the likely outcome ...Your internet provider and others were given your privacy (4th amendment) and next they intend shut down your voice unless you can pay the most to have a voice. Please don't let that happen! Protect the WEB so that we can continue to grow our connections and raise our concerns with each other and share what matters most to make the world a better place. Join free press.net, EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) or Demand Progress for up dates and actions and legal challenges to protect citizens/consumers and democratic rights interest.

Cable TV regulators want Oregon attorney general to investigate Comcast | Mike Rogoway | OregonLive.com

Cable TV regulators want Oregon attorney general to investigate Comcast | Mike Rogoway | OregonLive.com | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it

Cable regulators from four Oregon communities want the state attorney general to investigate Comcast, expressing concern that the cable TV company's billing practices may violate state consumer protection laws.

Regulators in Multnomah and Washington counties, along with the cities of Milwaukie and Eugene, wrote to the Oregon Department of Justice about broadcast and sports fees Comcast tacks onto subscribers' bills. The fees ostensibly cover the costs of carrying local broadcast channels and expensive national sports networks.

When fees go up, as they did last fall, Comcast charges a higher rate to all TV subscribers - even those under contracts that used to protect them from rate hikes. Since 2013, contracts no longer lock in those prices.

"That's a little bait-and-switchy," said Fred Christ, administrator of the Metropolitan Area Communications Commission, which regulates cable TV service in much of Washington County.

What’s wrong with the media? Too slanted. Too greedy. Too much power in too few hands. It’s time to change that. The fight for better media begins here, so get involved today. Read more and share with your friends.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:
I have called and contacted and signed petitions but we are going to need fresh new names and many of you to help with this one. We pay for services that allow us a voice we choose to have and reach out around the globe to others as small businesses, parents, students and individuals. Our voices matter or our ISP 's wouldn't be fighting for control with so much money. Please if you can take time to call and tell your representative how important the internet has been for you and that they need to fight to preserve the regulations that were finally won and put in place to preserve the net as it has been do it now! Tell your family and friends to as well.

90 years later, the broadcast public interest standard remains ill-defined | Brookings Institution

90 years later, the broadcast public interest standard remains ill-defined | Brookings Institution | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it

"The public interest standard has governed broadcast radio and television since Congress passed the Radio Act of 1927. However, decades of successive court cases and updated telecommunications laws have done little to clarify what falls into the public interest. The Radio Act gave local broadcasters monopolies over specific channels of electromagnetic spectrum to reduce interference on public airwaves. In exchange for control over a limited resource, the text of the law instructs broadcasters to operate in the “public interest, convenience, and necessity”. A recently released paper by Center for Technology Innovation Nonresident Senior Fellow Stuart N. Brotman outlines the legislative, judicial, and regulatory history of this public interest standard and offers some recommendations for how it might be reformed."
