Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

The ISPs, cable companies and wireless companies tell us trust them and they will self regulate abide by Net Neutrality and play fair. This and many other events lately prove that a lie.

Excerpt:

Internet activists in Germany demand a free and open Internet today, protesting in front of the annual general meeting of major German ISP Deutsche Telekom. They criticize the companies plans to slow down internet connections after a certain amount of traffic has been used. What is worse: the company is violating the principle of net neutrality – internet services can buy their way out of those limits.

For Local Businesses, the Internet Threat Isn't Just the Sales Tax
New York Times (blog)
Many of these businesses have a strong service component, which means they don't really have Internet competitors.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This is an excellent article and anyone who shops or has a tiny dream of working for as their own boss should read it.

Exceprt:

Why would a company choose to operate without a profit? Because it wants to provide great value? Check. Because it wants everyone to love the brand? Check. Because it wants to gain market share? Check. Because it wants to put everyone else out of business, so that it can one day flick a switch to raise prices and make a fortune? CHECK!

Don’t believe me? Well, here is Jeff Bezos of Amazon, explaining why making a profit isn’t important. Of course, he doesn’t say he’s planning to raise prices after he puts a lot of people out of business, but let me translate something for you: Gaining market share by not taking a profit makes the most sense if you are planning to raise prices later when you have less competition.

If this competition with giant Internet companies seems like some kind of Brave New World, it’s really not. It’s pretty much the same strategy the robber barons employed in the 19th century. Today’s combination of tax avoidance and profit delay enjoyed by the Web retailers has made it very difficult for some local retailers. But is the end near?

Consumer groups angered over ESPN plan to subsidize cellphone data plans - The Hill's Hillicon Valley

Consumer groups angered over ESPN plan to subsidize cellphone data plans - The Hill's Hillicon Valley | Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
Liberal groups are outraged about a potential plan for ESPN to subsidize smartphone data usage, saying it would violate the principle of net neutrality.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Make no mistake they are not making this offer for the good of sports fans but to beat competition and any cost will be passed on. We already pay to access ESPN in they are online unless they plan to pay to be data use free then charge everyone for subscriptions too watch...They will be able to because they know they will have bought private access to viewers. NO start up will have enough money to go around them to show us a better deal.

Pretty soon we will end up having allowed them to turn the amazing people powered internet into the same corrupt information for profit only, Radio and News of yesterday.

We will be feeding the internet to the media beast to brainwash us, lie to us, leave us uninformed and entertained to death, all while overcharging us for content they pick and service we didn’t want and don’t even like. Just to buy up politicians so they can keep ownership of the minds of the masses so they can bilk their pockets and life..

Excerpt:

ESPN has had talks with at least one major cellular carrier about paying to exempt its content from monthly data caps, The Wall Street Journal reported last week. The deal could allow customers to stream high-quality sports videos on their phones or tablets without it counting against their monthly data limits.

The liberal consumer groups argue that the Internet should remain an open platform that provides equal access to all websites, apps and services.

Tom Wheeler and the Coming War Over Net Neutrality

Tom Wheeler and the Coming War Over Net Neutrality | Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
The F.C.C. may ultimately have no choice but to get involved in the net-neutrality fight.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

This matters!

Excerpt:

An important aspect of the Internet’s original design is that many prices were set at zero—what have been called zero-price rules. The price to join the network is zero. The price that users and sites pay to reach others is zero: a blogger doesn’t need to pay to reach Comcast’s customers. And the price that big Web sites charge broadband operators to carry their content is also zero. It’s a subtle point, but these three zeros are a large part of what makes the Internet what it is. If net neutrality goes away, so does the agreement to freeze prices at zero.

What net neutrality means in practice for cable operators is that they don’t have to deal with rising programming costs in broadband. Cable operators pay Disney good money to carry ABC as a cable channel. But when a cable customer watches ABC shows over the Internet, using Hulu Plus or Amazon, the operator pays nothing. When they go to the ABC Web site, they also pay nothing. Rather, the consumer deals with the content provider directly, by watching ads or paying Amazon. The result: cable doesn’t have to pass on costs that it cannot control.
