Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Excerpt:

I mention all this because my eyes popped when I came across a posting on GigaOm which said portentously: "Journalism isn't just about informing readers, it's also about helping them take action." Doh!

Successful local (and national) newspapers in Britain have always been pro-active. Editors who listen to their readers' problems do not merely report them; they do their best to help. And that has always been the case.

Internet Slowdown Day was a huge succcess, to say the least.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Now do it again on Monday! Then let's go after congress members and let them know their jobs and their donors industries will not fair well if they break the internet. WE can choose our officials even with write-in votes if enough people want to do it. We can change who we do business with as well. Even if that means something extreme like millions dropping their phone and internet service on a single day. It can happen...it really could...or we could all decide to stop paying our bills for one full month or 4 months. Extreme but if there is no other option then it could happen...maybe start with a tiny act like do not go on the WEB at all for two days a week. The traffic counters that sell ads would have a hugely sad day. They want the WEB because we are there....that' is the only reason....that means if we in mass remove our self from the WEB enough then these commercial interest are spending time and money for nothing.

How the cable weasels would run a protection racket without net neutrality | Corrente | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
Hard to say this often enough. Radar:

’d like to make a few very brief points about net neutrality. For most readers of Radar, there’s probably nothing new here, but they address confusions that I’ve seen.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Well said!

Excerpt:

Network neutrality is entirely about treating all kinds of traffic equally. Video is the same as voice, the same as Facebook, the same as Amazon. Your ISP cannot penalize video traffic (or some other kind of traffic) because they’d like to get into that business or because they’re already in that business. In other words: when you buy Internet connectivity, you can use it for whatever you want. Your provider can’t tell you what kind of business to be in.

That last point deserves a closer look. In most of the United States, high speed Internet access is offered by a company that is also selling video services (i.e., cable TV). These same service providers would like to penalize companies, like Netflix, that they perceive as competition. And they are doing just that.

In this context, “you can pay us more to get into the fast lane” looks an awful lot like: “Nice business you have there. It would be too bad if something unfortunate happened to it. We’d be glad to sell you, uh, protection.” That’s not competition; that’s extortion. And it’s usually illegal.

Well urged.

NOTE And you had better believe that quirky little independent anti-establishment blogs would be at risk. They hate us for our freedoms.

Why Consumers and Businesses Need Permanent Freedom From Internet Taxes - In The Capital

Why Consumers and Businesses Need Permanent Freedom From Internet Taxes - In The Capital | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
Why Consumers and Businesses Need Permanent Freedom From Internet Taxes
In The Capital
Since 1996, the Internet Tax Freedom Act (ITFA) has prevented most states and municipalities from taxing Internet access to encourage Internet adoption and use.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

I'm not sure I agree with this but here is the argument from one point of view. My Question is why do local businesses need to pay taxes if these online businesses do not? Why do I have to pay income tax if they do not have to pay on their income and they are making more than I am most of the time?  I somehow think it is fair to have them add and pay State taxes to where the product is going to and pay the same as though the were located there as the businesses that are located there have had to pay.

I don't see the long term advantage of killing businesses that belong to the actual people living in the area and provide jobs that pay money for us to shop online. Those taxes help build the roads on which their products are brought to us on and the taxes help fund education so that more can be educated to get jobs and make things worth selling and buying as well as to just develop our general understanding of the world. We need to keep the taxes realistic for average earners and high enough to keep large corporation and the rich from owning  and controlling everything.
