U.S. intelligence chief backs Internet spy program

US intelligence chief backs Internet spy program (U.S. intelligence chief backs Internet spy program http://t.co/t45qORKUY7 via @RandDMagazine)
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

How easy would your job be if you could be the people that get to know what everyone else is doing but they do not get to know what you are doing? Our 4th amendment rights were set in place to prevent this very thing from occurring. I'm sure we live in a spy's dream world right now. It is hard to believe people would just set back and not hammer all our elected officials to stop this.

You could be a better teacher and everyone else could be better if we could know all the personal data on everyone around us but they couldn't know ours. The teachers and school could know if the student I had was fed well, slept over or was up till 2am or maybe if that student's family had a personal crisis educators need to be aware of.

Why this could help us prevent school shootings. If we gather data on every single student from birth on think how we could understand him or her and know where to job place each student. Parents could tell exactly which friends to eliminate and students would know immediately if their parents were having difficulties with money or love affairs. Employers would really be at an advantage to have complete details on employees before and during current work. The NSA and companies collecting data should market this to all that needs it Right? WRONG! GET A WARRANT FOR EACH CASE.OR GET OUT OF OUR BUISINESS. Everyone could benefit from getting to be a snoop or a fly on the wall,  but that doesn't make it right.

Web inventor Berners-Lee warns forces are 'trying to take control' - Telegraph

Web inventor Berners-Lee warns forces are 'trying to take control' - Telegraph | Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
Companies and governments “trying to take control of the internet” are undermining the founding principles of the web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee has warned.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

When Berners-Lee speaks it is worth listening. He didn't use his innovation to become a billionaire and control things right down to the medicine, vaccines, education and Genetically modified foods forced into our bodies and environment as Gates or others did, He designed and left the web open access to empower people to communicate together so all of us could participate in forming solutions and ideas to make our world a better place.

On a hopeful note, Excerpt:

Sir Tim called for governments to protect the neutrality and independence of the web and compared its democratic importance to the freedom of the press.

He said "organisations that keep the internet running" should be "connected to government but at arms length. That's really important and as years have gone by that's got more and more important. Once you have an open internet, with an open world wide web on top of it, I'm very optimistic".

Not so hopeful excerpt:

“If you can control [the internet], if you can start tweaking what people say, or intercepting communications, it's very, very powerful...it's the sort of power that if you give it to a corrupt government, you give them the ability to stay in power forever.”

Sir Tim was speaking as it emerged that the US government has been collecting huge amounts of personal information from Google, Facebook, Apple and other internet companies.

There have also been reports that British spies have been gathering intelligence from the internet giants "through a covertly run operation set up by America's top spy agency"

“Unwarranted government surveillance is an intrusion on basic human rights that threatens the very foundations of a democratic society,” Sir Tim said. “I call on all web users to demand better legal protection and due process safeguards for the privacy of their online communications, including their right to be informed when someone requests or stores their data.

Anonymous Just Leaked a Trove of NSA Documents

Anonymous Just Leaked a Trove of NSA Documents | Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
This keeps getting more and more interesting…
If this is true, way to go Anonymous!
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Why is it wrong to spy on those that think it is OK to spy on everyone anyway? Now that every citizen in the USA is to be spyed on and all personal electronic data seized and searched and stored then that would indicate that people need their own spies because that is how that works. Once you are spied on or distrusted by someone secretly then it is time to spy on them because they most certainly cannot be trusted behind your back. Surely NSA has heard the old "what good for the goose is good for the gander". I guess this is Anonymous' way of saying that and also "back at ya" at the same time.

Good Question, because the answer is if we are their enemy that would make these leaders everyone else's enemy, because for most do not love their enemy as directed by holly leaders...they hate them instead and seek to rule over and control or destroy them. That is not a good working relationship for a governmnet to have with the people it represents.

Chinese Hackers Access Advanced U.S. Weapons Systems

Chinese Hackers Access Advanced U.S. Weapons Systems | Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
Chinese hackers got access to more than two dozen advanced and critical U.S. weapons systems, according to a report by the Washington Post. (Wow!!!!! A little unnerving....
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

I will repeat this statement again...."Don't let corporations and the governments of the world use this as a reason to spy on citizens without proven just cause".  This sounds like the prefect storm to persuade most people to lay down their individual rights as a knee jerk reaction out of fear to get protection from cyber threats to the Nation.

My next question is who is stupid enough to think a bunch Beavis and Butt-heads that put such critical stuff on the "WORLD WIDE" WEB should be trusted with our personal little tidbits, which add up to an infinite sum of data and knowledge, when they can’t secure secret and top-secret data? We are also talking about corporations who often have their intellectual property protected only till the Chinese come up with the RIGHT BUYOUT price anyway. Who's to say that didn't happen behind close doors and this breach wasn't bought and paid for? We have embraced China and Chinese workers to the point where someone could likely fly back home to see Mom with this critical info in tow.

Did industry and our government, or maybe industry who IS our government is a better way to phrase it, really think lining our shelves with Chinese knockoffs of American and other countries concepts and ideas produced in curious communist/capitalist ventures wouldn't by extension naturally move on to critical knock offs. This might also raise some red flags to remodeling our schools based on industrial design and in an effort to keep up with China, a country so oppressive they always end up having to buy or maybe steal creative knowledge from more open societies.

My final repeated statement: Again, warrantless spying on citizens to “catch” Chinese spies is not the answer to this problem. Some things just don't need to be connected to the World Wide Web and this is a good example of why. Capitalism gone greedy is as ugly in a communist state run model as it is in the incorporated run United States Capitalistic model.

EXCERPT:

A Pentagon spokesman told the Post that the Department of Defense has "growing concerns about the global threat to economic and national security from persistent cyber-intrusions aimed at the theft of intellectual property, trade secrets and commercial data, which threatens the competitive edge of U.S. businesses like those in the Defense Industrial Base."

Experts consulted by the Post were surprised by the extensive list of compromised technologies.

Cloud computing is a trap, warns GNU founder Richard Stallman | Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
He says web-based programs like Google's Gmail will force people to buy into locked, proprietary systems that will cost more and more over time

The 55-year-old New Yorker said that computer users should be keen to keep their information in their own hands, rather than hand it over to a third party.

His comments echo those made last week by Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle, who criticised the rash of cloud computing announcements as "fashion-driven" and "complete gibberish".

"The interesting thing about cloud computing is that we've redefined cloud computing to include everything that we already do," he said. "The computer industry is the only industry that is more fashion-driven than women's fashion. Maybe I'm an idiot, but I have no idea what anyone is talking about. What is it? It's complete gibberish. It's insane. When is this idiocy going to stop?"

NSA revelations force question: What do we want? | Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
Government / #NSA watching Phones / Internet The important stuff is kept off line or Ambiguous #Online so who cares http://t.co/BR6RGBFxtG
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

Here is an excerpt from this article which does and excellent job of framing the critical focus we need about the NSA and others that are gathering  data from and about us and what the risk are and what we stand to lose in the trade off of privacy for security.

Excerpt:

It can, at first glance, seem a leap to draw a line between the way we share our private lives on Facebook or our search habits with Google and concerns about government surveillance. But surrendering privacy, whether to business or government, fundamentally shifts the balance of power from the watched to the watchers, experts say.

Americans may have largely accepted the idea of sharing personal information with businesses or in open forums as the necessary tradeoff for the use of new technologies. But they have done so without stopping to consider what those businesses are doing with it or how police or security officials might tap into it.

"We've allowed surveillance of all kinds to be normalized, domesticated, such that we frequently fail to tell the difference between harmful and helpful surveillance," said David Lyon, director of the Surveillance Studies Centre at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. "And we assume all too easily that if it's high tech, it's better."

Directors Reveal How PBS Quashed Airing of Negative Koch Brothers Film - Truthdig | Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
“Democracy Now!” asks whether PBS resorted to self-censorship in order to appease the Koch brothers when it decided not to show a documentary that portrayed David Koch—a major donor to public television—in an unflattering light.
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:

The fact that PBS is now more beholding to both for-profit corporations and the government by having long ago to reach out for funding from both alter to some degree the objectivity for the sake of public interest. This is not a surprise to most that understand the inner working of keep PBS going.

Democracy Now and Link TV are trying to hold to the donations and no corporate and govenrmnet funding....Link may air this since they are not beholding to corporations. We all need to send them money and increase our viewing and support to groups like those that want to share the truth and do investigative reporting.

After all Koch's money couldn't buy him the White House years ago, but he seems to have used it to buy him many other seats across the nation and make many beholden to him.

The merits of these arguments should be given serious consideration, but there is no need to address them here.  The D.C.
