When Berners-Lee speaks it is worth listening. He didn't use his innovation to become a billionaire and control things right down to the medicine, vaccines, education and Genetically modified foods forced into our bodies and environment as Gates or others did, He designed and left the web open access to empower people to communicate together so all of us could participate in forming solutions and ideas to make our world a better place.

On a hopeful note, Excerpt:

Sir Tim called for governments to protect the neutrality and independence of the web and compared its democratic importance to the freedom of the press.

He said "organisations that keep the internet running" should be "connected to government but at arms length. That's really important and as years have gone by that's got more and more important. Once you have an open internet, with an open world wide web on top of it, I'm very optimistic".

Not so hopeful excerpt:

“If you can control [the internet], if you can start tweaking what people say, or intercepting communications, it's very, very powerful...it's the sort of power that if you give it to a corrupt government, you give them the ability to stay in power forever.”

Sir Tim was speaking as it emerged that the US government has been collecting huge amounts of personal information from Google, Facebook, Apple and other internet companies.

There have also been reports that British spies have been gathering intelligence from the internet giants "through a covertly run operation set up by America's top spy agency"

“Unwarranted government surveillance is an intrusion on basic human rights that threatens the very foundations of a democratic society,” Sir Tim said. “I call on all web users to demand better legal protection and due process safeguards for the privacy of their online communications, including their right to be informed when someone requests or stores their data.

Why is it wrong to spy on those that think it is OK to spy on everyone anyway? Now that every citizen in the USA is to be spyed on and all personal electronic data seized and searched and stored then that would indicate that people need their own spies because that is how that works. Once you are spied on or distrusted by someone secretly then it is time to spy on them because they most certainly cannot be trusted behind your back. Surely NSA has heard the old "what good for the goose is good for the gander". I guess this is Anonymous' way of saying that and also "back at ya" at the same time.

YES! We need more voices speaking up for this....Please offer yours if you think it's a good idea. I hope the EU leads the way to this and we follow through with this here.

Across the world the same internet issues regarding  people and their leadership is called into this question: "Why is our governmnet treating us like the enemy?" Good Question, because the answer is if we are their enemy that would make these leaders everyone else's enemy, because for most do not love their enemy as directed by holly leaders...they hate them instead and seek to rule over and control or destroy them. That is not a good working relationship for a governmnet to have with the people it represents.

 Neelie Kroes’ dynamic re-thinking of the telecoms single market is very welcome and long overdue. The Commission has been stuck in an economist-driven rut on telecoms  for a very long time and if Mrs Kroes can  give it a shake up, we must applaud.

Not a reason to spy on everyone unless all are suddenly open books including all our governments.....Why do nations have secrets in modern times anyway?

I will repeat this statement again...."Don't let corporations and the governments of the world use this as a reason to spy on citizens without proven just cause".  This sounds like the prefect storm to persuade most people to lay down their individual rights as a knee jerk reaction out of fear to get protection from cyber threats to the Nation.

My next question is who is stupid enough to think a bunch Beavis and Butt-heads that put such critical stuff on the "WORLD WIDE" WEB should be trusted with our personal little tidbits, which add up to an infinite sum of data and knowledge, when they can’t secure secret and top-secret data? We are also talking about corporations who often have their intellectual property protected only till the Chinese come up with the RIGHT BUYOUT price anyway. Who's to say that didn't happen behind close doors and this breach wasn't bought and paid for? We have embraced China and Chinese workers to the point where someone could likely fly back home to see Mom with this critical info in tow.

Did industry and our government, or maybe industry who IS our government is a better way to phrase it, really think lining our shelves with Chinese knockoffs of American and other countries concepts and ideas produced in curious communist/capitalist ventures wouldn't by extension naturally move on to critical knock offs. This might also raise some red flags to remodeling our schools based on industrial design and in an effort to keep up with China, a country so oppressive they always end up having to buy or maybe steal creative knowledge from more open societies.

My final repeated statement: Again, warrantless spying on citizens to “catch” Chinese spies is not the answer to this problem. Some things just don't need to be connected to the World Wide Web and this is a good example of why. Capitalism gone greedy is as ugly in a communist state run model as it is in the incorporated run United States Capitalistic model.

This is a timely question to think about this week.

Here is an excerpt from this article which does and excellent job of framing the critical focus we need about the NSA and others that are gathering  data from and about us and what the risk are and what we stand to lose in the trade off of privacy for security.

But they have done so without stopping to consider what those businesses are doing with it or how police or security officials might tap into it.

"We've allowed surveillance of all kinds to be normalized, domesticated, such that we frequently fail to tell the difference between harmful and helpful surveillance," said David Lyon, director of the Surveillance Studies Centre at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. "And we assume all too easily that if it's high tech, it's better."

Across the globe it is hard to tell one country from the next when the temptation to spy on citizens out weighs all else.

This is how the internet may turn into the OLD Comcast, cell phone, cable plan model where they get paid by customers like the average user to access what we want and rich sponsors go behind our back and make sure they take over the whole conversation with paid sponsorship only getting to easily reach us....

ISP and content providers choose for all us STUPID PEOPLE THAT KEEP MAKING THEM RICH ENOUGH TO KEEP US UNINFROMED AND DUMB ENOUGH TO KEEP LETTING THEM DO IT!

OH YES THEY WILL ENTERTAINUS WITH 24/7 shows to hook us. Anything to keep everyone from actually thinking and doing and to keep everyone giving them money and power buying all the trash they want us to, both kinds of trash, worthless ideas, stuff and services like cheap greasy food and preselected information and entertainment based on greedy content and ISP where only they can create Marilyn Monroe or Elvis branding and anyone they don't select for the show won't stand a chance.

I say if these greedy companies can't play fair don't let them play. Isn't anyone else out there sick of people turning all the money they get from us around to walk all over everyone else they charge to pay for rigged games…personally I consider companies that hold he people of our nation back…. enemies of the people of the nation
