FCC OKs More Forward Auction Spectrum Applications | John Eggerton | Broadcasting & Cable | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it

The FCC has accepted another batch of applications from winning bidders in the forward portion of the broadcast incentive auction.

Those are bidders for broadcast spectrum being reclaimed for wireless broadband.

The big players' applications have already been accepted and the licenses granted, including the biggest bidder, T-Mobile, but this is the third batch of applications to be accepted, with more to come.

Petitions to deny the applications are due by Aug. 21, with oppositions to those petitions due Aug. 28 and replies due Sept. 5.

A people-owned internet exists. Here is what it looks like | Nathan Schneider | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
The future of the internet is in peril, thanks to surveillance, net neutrality and other assaults. But there are communities that are building their own
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:
“As a not-for-profit community-owned broadband provider, our loyalty is entirely to our customer-owners,” a spokesman recently told the local paper. “That will not change, regardless of what happens to the FCC regulations in question.” Municipalities across the country, from Santa Monica to Chattanooga, have quietly created their own internet service providers – and for the most part residents love them, especially in comparison to the competition. A major reason more towns haven’t followed suit is that the big telecoms companies have lobbied hard to discourage or outright ban community broadband, pressuring many states to enact legal barriers. It’s happening again in West Virginia. But the tide may be turning.

Influencer Marketing Shop Created Fake Accounts to Prove the Industry Is Full of Ad Fraud

Influencer Marketing Shop Created Fake Accounts to Prove the Industry Is Full of Ad Fraud | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it

Influencer marketing is one of the fastest growing channels in advertising, with our research estimating that $1 billion was spent on Instagram influencers alone in 2017. With brand dollars pouring into the space, social media influencers, whether established or aspiring, are vying for brand sponsorship deals.

I founded Mediakix, a dedicated influencer marketing agency, in 2011. In the years since, I have witnessed a rise in these deceptive practices and wanted to draw awareness to the issue. These practices span the gamut of unscrupulousness and range from gaming Instagram’s algorithm with “pods” to purchasing fake followers and engagement to creating entirely fake personas and accounts.

It’s difficult but not impossible to know whether an influencer has purchased fake followers and engagement. About a year ago, we were evaluating several accounts for potential campaigns and noted that one woman in particular had more than doubled her followers in less than a week.

While rapid follower growth isn’t the only indicator of whether an influencer paid for followers, it does raise a red flag, especially if nearly every Instagram post is sponsored. We checked her rate afterwards and it had nearly tripled due to her boosted (fake) following....

As net neutrality dies, one man wants to make Verizon pay for its sins | Jacob Kastrenakes | The Verge

As net neutrality dies, one man wants to make Verizon pay for its sins | Jacob Kastrenakes | The Verge | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it

Imagine if you took every single gripe you've had with Verizon over the past five years — the time it blocked Nexus 7 tablets for five months; the time it forced you to pay $20 per month for tethering; the time it tried to make you use a mobile wallet app called "ISIS" — and finally put your foot down. For a year, you spend free moments holed up in library stacks, speaking with experts, and researching and writing a sprawling legal complaint about the company's many, many misdeeds. And then you file it all with the FCC, hoping to get some payback.

That's exactly what Alex Nguyen did. And one day very soon, Verizon may have to answer for it.

The end of net neutrality is not the end of the open internet

The end of net neutrality is not the end of the open internet | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it
Say what you will about the merits of net neutrality; we are unlikely to reach consensus, much like academics and policy-makers have not reached consensus over the past 15 years ever since the term…
Monica S Mcfeeters's insight:
If these corporations have a problem with being identified as a carrier of common communications across our nation then is a solution. They can give up that role. They can sell off their corporate interest in connecting us through modern phone and internet communication services we pay for and just be content and entertainment providers working to promote their sponsors products and agendas...Then title two would not affect them. This is a video from a man you must not know...His name is Tim Berners-Lee. If you can convince him you are right then you may have some sort of credibility. He says firmly you are wrong! Period! You can find him at still at MIT the last I knew. He spent 10 years + inventing something called the Web Enterprise Builder...known more commonly as the World Wide "WEB"! CAF Auction Will Provide $2 Billion for Rural Broadband, FCC Anticipates 'New' Service Providers | Joan Engebretson | Telecompetitor.com

CAF Auction Will Provide $2 Billion for Rural Broadband, FCC Anticipates 'New' Service Providers | Joan Engebretson | Telecompetitor.com | Occupy Your Voice! Mulit-Media News and Net Neutrality Too | Scoop.it

The FCC said today that it expects to conduct a reverse auction of up to $1.98 billion in Connect America Fund (CAF) money in 2018, which will go toward the cost of bringing broadband to rural areas lacking broadband service. CAF auction funds are to be dispersed over a 10-year period.

The commission proposed enabling various types of service providers to bid in the CAF auction and recommended that providers be allowed to bid at the census block level.

Areas eligible for the CAF auction include rural areas where one of the nation’s largest price cap carriers is the incumbent telecom services provider and where that carrier declined to provide broadband service at the level of support offered by the FCC.
