Elaine Roberts, Ph.D's insight:

Academic vocabulary is one of the focal points for Common Core. Teachers, the Common Core, and the freedom to teach | The Thomas B. Fordham Institute

Common Core standards mean freedom to many teachers. Here's why.
Elaine Roberts, Ph.D's insight:

". . .the freedom to teach." Powerful words, and a powerful perspective.

". . . ownership is vital for effective implementation."

All those governors who are suddenly are trying to repeal Common Core are likely doing so because it's politically expedient not because they know anything about Common Core, an effective implementation, and good teaching.

This irritates me. @npr_ED should know better, or the folks doing this gig should do their homework.

They are correct that Common Core is not a curriculum. And if they really understood the instructional shifts, the Standards for Mathematical Practice, the Anchor Standards for Reading (and for Writing), and the standards themselves, they'd KNOW that a textbook isn't necessary.

Ed. Groups Urge More Federal Spending for Common-Core Tests

Ed. Groups Urge More Federal Spending for Common-Core Tests | It's Not About the Standards | Scoop.it
Two organizations hosted a roundtable discussion on Capitol Hill Wednesday to raise awareness about schools' need for more funding to prepare for common-core online assessments.
Elaine Roberts, Ph.D's insight:

One of the reasons NCLB started to go sideways is that it was not implemented well: there was little support and no funding.

There is so much that complicates Common Core, but one factor is funding which compounds the problem of implementation.

Whatever Will We Do If We Dump Common Core? - Huffington Post

New York Times
Whatever Will We Do If We Dump Common Core?
Elaine Roberts, Ph.D's insight:

There is some truth to Mercedes Schneider's observations. There were standards before Common Core. Some states had good, even great standards. Some states, well, not so much.

Ms. Schneider states "Revisiting education systems and assumptions is necessary- but it must emerge from the stakeholders. In order to improve the educational standards of any state, those with a vested interest in the quality of education for their children must be the ones to initiate, navigate, institute, and evaluate the standards (and curriculum and materials, and assessments) based upon outcomes they determine to be meaningful." Again, there is some truth to this.

I think our biggest challenge is not the standards themselves, but those standardized assessments and expectations of what the test results tell us about students, about teachers, and about schools.

I am a fan of Common Core, done right. I am a fan of collaborative conversations about student learning and teacher preparation. We have bloated our expectations of what standardized tests can and will tell us so the results combined with our expectations will collapse under the weight.

I had an epiphany as I was reading this article. For far too many of us, Common Core is still about the stinkin' test. People are worried about the PARCC and SBAC assessments. What's the Maker Movement and Why Should I Care? | Scholastic.com

What's the Maker Movement and Why Should I Care? | Scholastic.com | It's Not About the Standards | Scoop.it
We're glad you asked. The coauthor of Invent to Learn explains how to start one in your schools and why making is the most powerful way for kids to learn.
Elaine Roberts, Ph.D's insight:
"Both of these classes exemplify the trend that is pushing its way into more schools-the maker movement. The shift to "making" represents the perfect storm of new technological materials, expanded opportunities, learning through firsthand experience, and the basic human impulse to create. It offers the potential to make classrooms more child-centered: relevant and more sensitive to each child's remarkable capacity for intensity. Making is predicated on the desire that we all have to exert agency over our lives, to solve our own problems. It recognizes that knowledge is a consequence of experience, and it seeks to democratize access to a vast range of experience and expertise so that each child can engage in authentic problem solving."
