9 Great Online Libraries for Educators

9 Great Online Libraries for Educators | It's Elementary | Scoop.it

Libraries are significant resources for written text and educational materials. It is true that the surge in blogs, search engines, ebooks catalogues, and document sharing communities has tremendously weakened the online presence of libraries but still often times libraries provide a treasure trove of information and rare documents that you can hardly find elsewhere.

Educators should at least know about two or three library resources where to look for and find precious documentations. They should also introduce students to such links to use in their research.

Check out this list of some of the best libraries online and share it with your colleagues:  http://www.educatorstechnology.com/2012/07/8-great-online-libraries-for-educators.html

"To teach students how to analyze text at that level, we need to train their teachers to do the same." | It's Elementary | Scoop.it

"If we narrow the Common Core down to a handful of changes, one of the largest is that students will need to read texts much more attentively than ever.

According to the standards, students will begin analyzing figurative language in fifth grade; they'll tackle allusions in eighth. And these skills can't be taught in isolation, either -- the Common Core asks us to create authentic experiences with text. Essentially, if you see a literature discussion in which kids aren't flipping through pages feverishly, the class likely isn't standards-aligned."

It is even suitable as a learning aid for various languages as the human brain can memorize picture-associated words better than words without an association.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.classteacher.apks.pictionary
Learn to spell, read, and memorize words using the authentic phonetic sounds and rhythm of the English language.
Easy to operate, the Pictionary has been indexed into two parts. Each part has words strewn across the screen. Click on each word and check its meaning, related picture and phonetic sound.
Coming soon!!!!! Record and play your voice to check the right pronunciation.

Educational leadership in an online world: connecting students to technology responsibly, safely, and ethically

Educational leadership in an online world: connecting students to technology responsibly, safely, and ethically | It's Elementary | Scoop.it

The current gap in technology knowledge and lack of leadership preparation related to digital literacy for school environments can cause serious problems, as school leaders, parents, and broader social communities are currently realizing. The authors describe strategies for educational leaders to prepare their stakeholder groups for a digital future, as well as take actions to reduce technology misuse or abuse. Educational institutions should consider this Digital Citizenship model as a potential new tool to for students, faculty and staff—both on-site and online.

95% of students age 12-17 are online and of that 80% use social media. How can schools utilize technology effectively in learning an still keep our kids safe? Respect yourself and others, educate yourself and others and protect yourself and others. We need to teach kids to safely use technology. As educators, choose programs and applications that are well researched and reliable.

Daniel Benitez's curator insight, January 14, 3:35 PM

Gives a great description of digital etiquette and implementation for those new instructors weary of the digital change to classrooms.

Ernest Wang's curator insight, March 15, 8:55 AM

I agree that digital literacy may cause lack of leadership. To me,all this problems would become even more worse as now more and more people start abusing technology and not so much for study related stuff.Hence,it is important that something has to be done.Perhaps parents can encourage their child to leave their handphones and other technology related item at home unless it is a must.Or maybe teachers can have students to surrender their phones at the start of the day and only returning to them at the end of the day.Parents and teachers can reward them after each day to encourage students to not have contact with technology and would not abuse it.This may influence students to be more active and playing outdoor activities. It benefits them as lesser people would have eye related problems such as myopia. This may or may not be fool proof as more students are addicted to their handphones and might not want to leave their handphones.

Flipping the classroom is not new anymore so it could be time for the students to start generating the content and learning for the class. These iPad apps can make it easier to empower students to take an active roll in their learning.
