50 of the best Free Apps for teachers

50 of the best Free Apps for teachers | It`s all about Education and ICT | Scoop.it
That’s a pretty general and subjective idea. The best for them as human beings–health, finances, and entertainment? The best for them in the classroom? To connect with other educators? To stay on top of emerging tools and trends in education? To use with students?

For iOS, Android, or Windows Phone? Can we assume there’s WiFi access? Is data use an issue? What about data privacy? And what do we mean by “free” Truly free? Are in-app purchases available? Necessary? Is it a free version that has hideous banners everywhere?

To say that there is a lot to consider is an understatement.

That said, we’ve taken a wide-lens view of the modern teacher and taken a stab at what might be considered 50 of the best really, truly actually free apps available for iOS. They may have some paid options, but they’re each entirely useful without spending a penny.

While we do look at music, health tracking apps, and other teachers-as-a-human-being apps, we focus mostly on the kinds of digital content that will help you teach more effectively to a wider range of students in more compelling and dynamic ways than ever before. All free.

A Different Approach to Coding — Bright — Medium

A Different Approach to Coding - Bright - Medium

We are strong proponents of children learning to code, but we have concerns about the motivations and methods underlying many of these new learn-to-code initiatives. Many of them, motivated by a shortage of programmers and software developers in industry, focus especially on preparing students for computer science degrees and careers, and they typically introduce coding as a series of logic puzzles for students to solve.

We co-founded the Scratch Foundation in 2013 to support and promote a very different approach to coding. For us, coding is not a set of technical skills but a new type of literacy and personal expression, valuable for everyone, much like learning to write. We see coding as a new way for people to organize, express, and share their ideas.

This approach to coding is embodied in our Scratch programming software developed at the MIT Media Lab and available for free online. With Scratch, children ages eight and up snap together graphical programming blocks to create interactive stories and games with animated characters. They can share their projects in the Scratch online community, where others can try them out, give feedback and suggestions, and even revise and extend the projects with their own ideas.

A Toolkit for Silicon-based Quantum Computing

A Toolkit for Silicon-based Quantum Computing | It`s all about Education and ICT | Scoop.it
Before quantum computing becomes practical, researchers will need to find a practical way to store information as quantum bits, or qubits. Researchers are making significant progress toward the creation of electronic devices based on qubits made of single ions implanted in silicon, one of the most practical of all materials.

“Bit” is a contraction of “binary digit,” but unlike a classical bit, which is plain-vanilla binary with a value of either 0 or 1, a quantum bit, or qubit — the theoretical basis of quantum computing — holds both 0 and 1 in a superposed state until it is measured.

A vast computational space can be created with relatively few quantum-mechanically entangled qubits, and the measurement of one qubit can instantly resolve an intricate calculation when all the entangled qubits are “collapsed” to a specific value by the measurement.

So how does one make and measure a qubit? The problem has engaged scientists for years. Many arrangements have been proposed and some demonstrated, each with its advantages and disadvantages, including tricky schemes involving superconducting tunnel junctions, quantum dots, neutral atoms in optical lattices, trapped ions probed by lasers, and so on.

In the long run, however, qubits based on individual dopant atoms implanted in silicon may have the edge. The materials and methods of silicon-chip manufacturing are familiar and, when applied to quantum-computer devices, have the potential for easy scale-up.

“There are three pillars to the development program my colleagues and I have been following,” says Thomas Schenkel of Berkeley Lab’s Accelerator and Fusion Research Division. “One is the theory of quantum measurement in the devices we build, led by Professor Birgitta Whaley from the Department of Chemistry at UC Berkeley; another is the fabrication of these devices, headed by myself and Professor Jeff Bokor from UC Berkeley’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; and the third is to actually measure quantum states in these devices, an effort led by Professor Steve Lyon from Princeton’s Department of Electrical Engineering. Of course, things don’t necessarily happen in that order.”

Coding: Galaxy walk

If you are one of the millions who tried the Hour of Code this year,  you know that one of the themes was Star Wars and that by the end of the hour, you could create your own Star Wars-themed game.

Every student at my school completed the Hour of Code, but I got to thinking about the final puzzle where they had the opportunity to create their own Star Wars-themed game.  I decided to connect this with the game design and the design process itself with user feedback and all.  Here's how we did our galaxy walk in one class period:
