Top Project management practices

Top Project management practices | Project Management | Scoop.it
The perfect combination of planning, monitoring and controlling is an essential component, when it comes to project management. These elements help you to plan strategies and make them work. Every business organization wants to accomplish projects with better, faster and affordable means that can be achieved only with the use of effective project management techniques. Here, we will discuss some major phases of project management.

Planning

The project can be defined on the basis of its planning process that should be done precisely by considering its different aspects. Begin with project overview including its core objectives, scopes, assumptions and risks, approaches, initial cost and duration. The detailed work-plan or planning horizon of project provides you instructions for creating and managing the project. As a model you can use a former work-plan from a similar project if not, create a conventional work-breakdown structure and network layout. As the project progresses, the planning horizon moves forward with high level activities.

Initially, one needs to outline the resources that are concerned with project and will be used to manage it. It will include related management issues, changes of scope, communication, risk quality and more. It is necessary to manage the project proactively and systematically ensuring that project team and client have mutual understating of how it will be managed and what techniques will be used. Once you are done with the basic planning, stir towards execution of work-flow. Usually, the challenges have rigor impact and discipline is required to execute personal project management skills.

Review the work-plan on daily basis to determine the project progress in two aspects, the schedule and budget.
Identify the prior activities performed during project planning and update your work-plan.
Monitor the budget to determine the actual sum consumed during task.

Along with this, it is important to look for the warning signs like variance in budget or schedule, discovering accomplished activities, unscheduled overtime, quality complains and more.

Managing Scope

It is an important plan of action that required for controlling the project. Sometimes, project fails because of various major and minor deliverables, which are irrelevant with original project requirement or project definition, not because of team skills and estimation problems. The management procedure with wide scope-change management is a must for successful accomplishment of task. Add significant functions or new deliverables to the project. Scope creep can be defined as the small scope changes, which have been developed without scope-change management procedure.

Managing risk

While execution of work-plan, identify the common risks and for each one of them determine the probability and their potential impact on project. The higher risk plans should have specific limits and place to mitigate them, whereas the medium risk plans need to be evaluated and managed proactively. There are different types of risks like level of expertise, unfamiliarity with new techniques and, problem with equipment integration and more. In order to determine the risk management of project, perform an updated risk assessment on regular basis. It is essential to resolve issues immediately.
