Has anybody tried the Parrallels software?

Is it worth buying a Mac to run mainly Windows applications via a tool like Parrallels...?

Might sound like a crazy idea but surely you get a good looking machine with good quality hardware and running Windows applications (work apps only run in Windows...)

Is this a crazy idea or are you better off buying a new Windows machine...your thoughts?

Future of Work: 3 Big Predictions

Future of Work: 3 Big Predictions | IT Helpdesk French | Scoop.it

Computing pioneer Alan Kay had some advice in the 1980s that Steve Jobs clearly took to heart: "People who are really serious about software should make their own hardware." Enough said, right? Kay's prescience came to mind again when Google recently announced it was buying Nest, maker of the smart home thermostat, for $3.2 billion.

That's not pocket change, and it's prompted the digerati to proclaim once again that hardware is the new software. And they're absolutely right. The Internet of Things has gone mainstream. Here are three predictions on what it will do to the way you work:

Rise of the 'Thingernet'

Until now, the conversation around the Internet of Things, a neologism that imagines a future dominated by machine-to-machine communications, has been a low murmur--at least outside of tech circles. But with Google's acquisition of Nest (and its $13 billion buyout of Motorola before that), that buzzing has been amplified into a full-blown chorus. We're no longer talking about automatic syncing between a smartphone and a computer or the on/off switch on a Bluetooth device. It's becoming increasingly obvious that the Internet of Things (or, "Thingernet," as The Economist calls it) is rapidly changing the way we, as humans, interact. Just as important, the Internet of Things is fundamentally reshaping how we work.

A “New” War for Talent

A “New” War for Talent | IT Helpdesk French | Scoop.it

In 1997, Ed Michaels, Helen Handfield-Jones, Beth Axelrod of McKinsey & Company wrote a book entitled: The War For Talent.

The book depicted a battle for talent during the dotcom era.

However, going into 2014, we are in a new era that I have referenced as an unprecedented fight for growth. In meeting with corporate leaders worldwide, there is consensus that the problem of growth – or lack of it – is rapidly becoming the world’s No. 1 problem.

Governments and corporate CEOs alike are grappling with the growth question, even if from different perspectives.

BYOD: Like inviting your boss into your house when you're not home

BYOD: Like inviting your boss into your house when you're not home | IT Helpdesk French | Scoop.it
The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) movement is gaining traction, but before you bring your phone to work you'd better think it through.

What you must realize is that your employer may insist at some point to scrutinize what's on your BYOD phone. Perhaps there's a rumor that an employee is grabbing company information, or that someone is snapping photos of sensitive things in the office. Maybe your company simply wants to update your work apps or settings.

Whatever the reason, it's not outside the realm of possibility that one day your employer may analyze the information on your phone. Yes, it's your personal phone but the BYOD situation means it's also the same as a work-provided phone.

Maybe it's not a big deal if your boss asks you to hand your phone over, but it still won't be a comfortable situation. What personal photos have you taken that reside on the phone? What intimate text messages have you exchanged with your spouse? You get the picture. It would be sort of like inviting your boss to your home when you're not there. What might he find snooping around your hacienda?

It's not just phones, either. Some folks are taking tablets to work and those may expose even more personal data. Tablet owners usually surf the web more heavily on a tablet than a phone.

===> What would your boss see if your web history was analyzed? <===

A MUST read!!!
