Alabama just took control of waters up to 9 miles off the coast from the feds; here's why that's a big deal - Yellowhammer News | Interesting News around Alabama: It Happens in Alabama | Scoop.it
Alabama's red snapper fishing industry applauded the extension of Alabama's state waters.
ItHappensinAlabama's insight:

First off, a huge thank you goes out to Alabama Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), who worked behind-the-scenes to advocate for Alabama’s interests and gaining more control for Alabama, from the Federal Government. Thanks, also, to Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-AL1).

Saltwater fishing, in Alabama, has a $727 million economic impact on the state as a whole. With extending the state's waters, this could mean the days for private recreational fisherman, who fish for red snapper off the Alabama Gulf Coast, could possibly double, in the future and drastically increase tourism dollars.

Gulf State Park is one of Alabama’s most cherished assets; it preserves more than 6,000 acres of pristine coastal scenery and wildlife habitat, and has more than 600,000 annual visitors.

ItHappensinAlabama's insight:

Alabama State Parks operates as a user pay system which means that about 90 percent its budget is funded by park patrons. This project is launched through an $85.5 million allocation of early restoration dollars from BP to compensate for lost recreational visits to the park during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the project includes five key components:

1) enhancing the trail system
2) restoring the dunes
3) building an environmental information center
4) creating a research and education center
5) rebuilding the lodge at Gulf State Park

The vision of the restoration project is to allow every park visitor to connect with nature.

What are your thoughts on this project? Is this too much to spend or not enough?

Why Holy Thursday is so important to Christians

Why Holy Thursday is so important to Christians | Interesting News around Alabama: It Happens in Alabama | Scoop.it

Except for the resurrection on Easter, Holy Thursday is possibly one of the most important, complex, and profound days of celebration.

ItHappensinAlabama's insight:

Today is Holy Thursday and  marks the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his apostles prior to his betrayal, trial and crucifixion. During the Last Supper, Jesus offers himself as the Passover sacrifice, the sacrificial lamb. Christ also bids farewell to his followers and prophesizes that one of them will betray him and hand him over to the Roman soldiers.

Many important Christian rituals come from the story of the Last Super. The name "Maundy Thursday" is derived from the Latin word mandatum meaning "commandment." The primary commandment of Jesus' message is found in the story of the Last Supper when Jesus humbles himself to wash the feet of his apostles prior to the traditional Passover meal. Jesus then commands them to "Love one another as I have loved you" (John 13:34). In observance of this commandment, the act of feet washing is often performed as part of Maundy Thursday church services.

The other important Christian ritual to come out of the Last Supper story is that of the Eucharist or Holy Communion.

Blessed Holy Thursday to All and Peace Be With You, Amen.

Alabama a "Food DESERT"... Healthy Food Financing Act addresses need for access to fresh, nutritious food

Alabama a "Food DESERT"... Healthy Food Financing Act addresses need for access to fresh, nutritious food | Interesting News around Alabama: It Happens in Alabama | Scoop.it

Alabama is a state with vast natural resources; home-grown, farm-raised, or fresh-caught food products but The Alabama Department of Public Health describes food deserts as a neighborhood or town “with no immediate access to quality foods that support a healthy diet.”  They exist all across the State in rural and urban areas -- even in your own community.

ItHappensinAlabama's insight:

I agree. As sad as it is, this is going on all over rural Alabama! I drive several thousands of miles each month, around our state, and see this all the time. Dollar General has seen the hunger and is making a fortune off of the fact that we have people with limited or no transportation to a grocery store. (Rockford, Luvern, Wadley, Walsboro,  the list goes on.) Keep in mind, I am not talking down about DG, they have seen a need and are providing a solution.

I have seen people go in and buy 2 and three buggies of canned food at a Dollar General because it is the only time they will have transportation for the month to get food for their family. All of this is processed food, not fresh, not what our state is known for.

This saddens my heart. I admit, in years past, I have been there myself, living on pork 'n beans and white bread or roman noodles. I have also had family members that worked but only made a small amount over their housing and utilities that had to fish for every meal. (WOW! Talk about an expert at seasonings!!! Fish could become pork, beef, chicken, You name it - such a talent!)

I want too see a remedy to this and see all Alabamians have access to healthy food.

Please share your stories and thoughts on this issue with It Happens in Alabama on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/ihia2012?ref=hl
