The Rise of the Sharing Economy

The Rise of the Sharing Economy | IT and Public Affairs | Scoop.it

LAST night 40,000 people rented accommodation from a service that offers 250,000 rooms in 30,000 cities in 192 countries. They chose their rooms and paid for everything online. But their beds were provided by private individuals, rather than a hotel chain. Hosts and guests were matched up by Airbnb, a firm based in San Francisco. Since its launch in 2008 more than 4m people have used it—2.5m of them in 2012 alone. It is the most prominent example of a huge new “sharing economy”, in which people rent beds, cars, boats and other assets directly from each other, co-ordinated via the internet.

It’s not just the managers that need to adapt and evolve to the changing workplace; it’s also the non-managerial employees. Dramatic changes in the way we work are being fueled by new behaviours and new technologies.

In fact, there are five trends which are shaping the future of work. To keep pace there are five qualities that the modern employee needs to possess.

Landmark Reincarnate: Palazzo Campari in Milan

Landmark Reincarnate: Palazzo Campari in Milan | IT and Public Affairs | Scoop.it

Considered ahead of its time even in the 1960s, when it was first built, the Palazzo Campari building, (now La Serenissima) located in the historic centre of Milan is today a refurbished modern wrap.

New owners commissioned firm Park Associati to refurbish the landmark on the corner of via Turati and via Cavalieri in the historic centre of Milan, with careful attention to the preservation of its character. They also wanted to turn an inefficient building into an efficient one and provide a modern make-over.

Other distinct features like reclaiming space on the ground floor opened up the areas, while pulling back elevations made it possible to eliminate cold bridging.

This, along with other energy-conserving measures got the building a Gold LEED certification. Useful floor area was relocated, allowing new spaces to be built and given away for tertiary use. Meanwhile, the landscaped courtyard, which forms the heart of the complex, has been reinterpreted in a contemporary setting...

This is a quick article giving sound reasoning for why organizations need to create a storied culture.

If you are a business leader, here is your beginning roadmap for working with stories in your organization.

If you are an entrepreneur growing a business, here is your beginning roadmap for building a storied culture with employees and vendors.

And if you are a consultant, here's a list of reasons 'why' a storied culture is important that you can use in presentations and workshops with clients.

What else would you add to this list?

37 Ways to Use Social Media to Market Your Website

37 Ways to Use Social Media to Market Your Website | IT and Public Affairs | Scoop.it

The key to every site’s success is through good marketing and promotion. Even if you have really good and substantial content on your site, you still need to promote it to avoid getting left behind the competition. In the internet community, the best way to achieve an increase in website traffic and revenue is to take advantage of social media. When used correctly, this tool can provide a platform for brand awareness, exposure, networking, and a huge boost in traffic & sales.

Since there are so many different definitions of social media, let’s clarify what we’re talking about here. Social media are primarily Internet- and mobile-based tools for sharing and discussing information. The term most often refers to activities that integrate technology, telecommunications and social interaction, and the construction of words, pictures, videos and audio. This interaction, and the manner in which information is presented, depends on the varied perspectives and "building" of shared meaning among communities, as people share their stories and experiences.

Urban Art: Vancouver’s Mixed-Use Tower by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG)

Urban Art: Vancouver’s Mixed-Use Tower by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) | IT and Public Affairs | Scoop.it

A BIG step forward for Vancouver’s latest mixed-use tower making international headlines, as the 497-foot tall proposal has received an “enthusiastic endorsement” from the city’s design panel.

The Bjarke Ingels Group-designed tower promises to add a twist to Vancouver’s skyline and create a new identity for an undefined section of town at the fringe of the city’s residential area. The 700,000 square foot complex – which contains shopping, housing and rental apartments – was praised by the panel for anchoring itself on a nine-story podium that occupies the disused, interstitial spaces found between the Granville Street Bridge’s entry and exit ramps.

BIG proposes to transform these spaces, which are dominated by cars and lack human activity, into a cultural and pedestrian destination. Glass “prisms” will provide retail and public space, while existing building facades and bridge surfaces will be converted into a dramatic outdoor gallery. In addition, Bjarke envisions the road which crosses below the bridge to become a host for outdoor markets, festivals and concerts. Impressed, panel member Peter Wreglesworth described the project as “whole composition that is urban art.”

This is why I keep harping on educators to join Twitter--it's function let's it occupy a different ecological niche than Facebook.  This function is towards professional and personal interests, and not based on who you already know.  In other words, you can absolutely be a professional on Twitter and get a professional network that will help facilitate your growth.

What behaviour does your business use more..Brand Awareness or Lead Generation

The Fish Firm's comment, February 12, 2013 11:20 AM
@MarrilDeFiddes we make a strong effort to do both... Brand awareness mostly our first year and now we are focusing on material 'worth' downloading in exchange for lead's email as well as developing some online products... Locally, I focus on referrals from current or previous clients for lead generation... It's all a slow process!
