What’s better: Self-esteem or self-compassion?

What’s better: Self-esteem or self-compassion? | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it

Self-esteem has long been touted as a key ingredient for success. But psychologist Heidi Grant Halvorson says on her The Science of Success blog that recent research suggests high self-esteem does not predict better performance or greater success, even if people with high self esteem may believe they’re more successful. But research also suggest a substitute that may be the key to unlocking your potential for greatness: self-compassion.

My Ego Likes To Snowball: Five telltale signs that your ego is hurting you | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it
In great effort to protect themselves (ourselves) our ego, causes tons of suffering. It seems ridiculous to make ourselves suffer in the guise of protecting ourselves, but we do it every day. It’s not funny.

Every day.

Are you wondering why we would do this? I do. No, it doesn’t mean we are stupid. We just learned a long time ago that this was the right way to do it. But as it turns out, this is the wrong way.

Taking a break is secret to success

Taking a break is secret to success | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it

Taking a break is secret to success. Sydney scientists have found learning improves when students take a rest from continuous study or training.

''It seems intuitive that every minute of study should make you better, but, actually, if you do too much it might backfire and you end up wasting time,'' said the study's lead researcher, Joel Pearson.

Ten Steps to Genuine Self-Acceptance

Ten Steps to Genuine Self-Acceptance | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it
Where do genuine self-love and self-acceptance come from? We get these things by soaking up all the affirmation our parents give us when we're little. Also, our parents model their good self-worth to us.

What happens, though, if our parents didn’t give us what we needed? Are we doomed to forever feeling inadequate or unworthy if our folks were neglectful toward us or unaccepting of themselves?

The good news is that a person can develop self-love at any stage of life. Like learning a language, it’s easier to do as a child but it’s absolutely possible to do as an adult, using the following ten steps:

Peace and Protection From Abuse

Peace and Protection From Abuse | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it

Years ago, I thought the most frightening thing in the world would be to stand up to abusers. But the willingness to stand toe to toe with an abuser isn’t where I needed the most courage. I showed the most courage when I started to stand up to the lies within me—when I began to challenge the false messages I learned from the abuse. When I was finally able to confront what really happened to me and really understood the truth, confronting abuse outside of me became much less difficult.

But being emotional and emotionally connected to self are two completely different things.

Being emotional meant I took everything personally. This made intense relationships with the opposite sex agonizing. Every little argument meant she didn’t love me and was walking out the door...

My Mother In Law is Still Sitting Between Us...: Merry Hoarding Holidays! (Lengthy and worth it) | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it

So my parents came to our home this year for Xmas. They seem to come every other year. My mother is my HP [hoarding parent] and my father is the poor soul that has to put up with her crap.

My brother and I actually penned a letter to our father a couple of months ago about our concerns regarding HP. I shared that letter and his response with all of you. [On the COH board.] Both through subsequent emails and on the phone, my father assured me that she was "getting better" and that he was hopeful that they would be able to get the house cleaned by Spring, etc.
