How to be optimistic, but not annoying

How to be optimistic, but not annoying | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it

Here is my secret to optimism: I operate under the assumption that no matter what oppresses people, they enact some resistance somewhere, even if it is in their mind. We hear a story the way we experience the world. I hear the resistance, the skills, and the hope. And then I hold up a mirror for my clients to see it, too. This instigates an immediate change in their perceptions and feelings. And it is not annoying. (Maybe they are just being polite.)

Allow Yourself to Feel | Heal Now and Forever

Allow Yourself to Feel | Heal Now and Forever | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it

One of the most powerful things you can do for healing is to allow yourself to feel. An unfelt, unresolved feeling, especially one we judge to be pathological can reek havoc on our emotions, our relationships, and our identity. We might not be feeling, but it feels like we are since we are suffering so badly. How would our lives be different if we just allowed ourselves to feel? “If you don’t start a feeling, you cannot take that feeling to an end,” says Women, Food, and God, author, Geneen Roth. If we don’t feel, we are cheating ourselves of the relief of finishing it. In a way, the feeling is chasing us, merely one step behind, keeping us moving, fighting, going in a perpetual state of stress since we cannot let down our guards lest it catch up.

10 Ways We Hurt Our Romantic Relationships

10 Ways We Hurt Our Romantic Relationships | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it

It's not easy to have a great relationship with your boy/girlfriend, partner, or spouse.  But it’s not impossible, either — it takes some work, of course, but it’s good work, work that’s a joy when everything comes together.

A lot of times, though, the work isn’t enough. We get in our own way with ideas and attitudes about relationships that are not only wrong, but often work to undermine our relationships no matter how hard we work at it.

You Are Good Enough and You Deserve the Best

You Are Good Enough and You Deserve the Best | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it
“What other people think of me is none of my business.” ~Wayne Dyer

We sometimes make excuses as to why we don’t deserve the best.

We say that our relationship with our partner is good enough and that other people have much worse relationships. We don’t reach for our dreams because doing so would make us feel too selfish.

How Important Is Self Worth in Terms of Healing?

How Important Is Self Worth in Terms of Healing? | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it

For some, the unworthiness runs deep and has been running a long time. It comes in a voice from the past. It is often the voice of someone who should have been trustworthy- a parent, an uncle, a grandparent. But instead this person told them that they were stupid and not good enough in speech and in action every chance they got. The voice stays with people, long past the end of the abusers’ life, and it is dreadfully hard to get rid of. It defines for them who they are and what their position in the world is: loser, disgusting, subhuman, undeserving.

Dedicated to helping others heal though inspiration and love..

Today’s meditation is about forgiving ourselves. This is probably the single most important activity we can do to help us heal. Forgive ourselves. Often when we make mistakes or blame ourselves (even for something we didn’t do) the self judgment takes off like a rocket, causing all kind of spiritual, emotional and physical dis-ease. It is time to stop this rocket.

Oakland Effect: Can a lack of empathy lead to violent behavior?

Oakland Effect: Can a lack of empathy lead to violent behavior? | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it

Several months ago, I was talking to an Oakland police officer on the telephone, discussing a particular homicide investigation, when the conversation turned broad.

...science is increasingly showing us that repeated exposure to violence -- whether it's gang-related, domestic abuse, psychological torture, maternal separation or substance abuse -- has the long-term effect of dulling and in some cases eliminating the trait of empathy. This is key. Empathy is paramount to socialization, understanding social cues, conversing and communicating with others. It is one of the things that makes us most human. Conversely, a lack of empathy, or a dulled and stunted sense of empathy, is a crippling handicap, as well as a pretty good marker of someone bearing the traits of a psychopath.

Agreement, appreciation and affection spread warmth like sunshine.

Some people are upbeat to talk with. They feel "warm." Whether they are your boss, your employee or colleague, your friend, family members or loved ones; these folks feel safe to share with, and, like sunshine, radiate good vibes. Their positivity makes you want to talk with them more. At the same time the warmth that they emit enhances the pleasure that they themselves experience in relationships.

When Acceptance is NOT the Answer :: Emerging From Broken

When Acceptance is NOT the Answer :: Emerging From Broken | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it

People were expressing difficulty with having been constantly told to “accept others” for the way they are. This directive always seems to be issued when someone is expressing difficulties with having been devalued, discounted and mistreated. I have come to realize that this is where the difficulty lies. When we are directed to accept, it is implied that acceptance means to accept the abusive behavior of the other person. This misunderstanding and false teaching gets deeply mixed into many relationships and is used as a justification for all kinds of abuse.

Sometimes There Is No Right Way | Tiny Buddha: Wisdom Quotes, Letting Go, Letting Happiness In

Sometimes There Is No Right Way | Tiny Buddha: Wisdom Quotes, Letting Go, Letting Happiness In | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it
“You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist.” ~Friedrich Nietzsche

I was raised in a home where a very common phrase was, “There’s a right way and a wrong way.”

The right way was the way my parents wanted things done. There were a great many rules surrounding the right way for nearly everything, in an attempt to ensure that we got it right, and, when the rules weren’t enough to enforce the rightness of our behavior, there were punishments, harsh words, and sometimes very public humiliation.

‘Nice child’ can’t rescue hoarder dad

‘Nice child’ can’t rescue hoarder dad | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it
Most of us were shocked this month when a Wayland senior citizen died in a fire at his home with no running water and virtually no way out.

Most of us were shocked two years ago when a Bellingham couple and their dog were found dead in their home after emergency responders used a hydraulic wedge to pry open the door blocked by books, boxes and bins stacked to the ceiling.

Barbara Allen is saddened but hardly shocked by such stories.

It’s likely only a matter of time before her father is one of those headlines.

As explained by Ronda Bresnick Hauss in a recent article in the Hill Rag, advanced technology such as PET scans and MRIs allow researchers to examine the brain. While using the mind to heal the body was often discredited or disregarded in the past, these new approaches indicate that the placebo effect does cause actual changes in brain chemistry which in turn leads to changes in the body.
