Psychologists link emotion to vividness of perception and creation of vivid memories

Psychologists link emotion to vividness of perception and creation of vivid memories | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it
Have you ever wondered why you can remember things from long ago as if they happened yesterday, yet sometimes can't recall what you ate for dinner last night?

It's all about how much emotional impact the memory carries with it. Memories are clearer when they're emotionally arousing.

According to Rebecca Todd, a postdoctoral fellow in U of T's Department of Psychology and lead author of the study published recently in the Journal of Neuroscience, "Whether they're positive -- for example, a first kiss, the birth of a child, winning an award -- or negative, such as traumatic events, breakups, or a painful and humiliating childhood moment that we all carry with us, the effect is the same.""How vividly we perceive something in the first place predicts how vividly we will remember it later on," says Todd. "We call this 'emotionally enhanced vividness' and it is like the flash of a flashbub that illuminates an event as it's captured for memory."

This is a great article for the newbies. I am still in the power struggle phase.I don't exert power just tell her what I am prepared to do and not do. The difference is she is still struggling to regain power. There is some sort of ridiculous middle ground that can be reached. But reading the comments OCPD can't be fixed like people think it can. Been there done that got the t shirt. Its like living with a handicapped person who doesnt realise it.

Researchers Map Emotional Intelligence in the Brain

Researchers Map Emotional Intelligence in the Brain | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it

After mapping the neural basis of general intelligence in a previous study, University of Illinois neuroscience professor Aron Barbey led a study to map the brain regions associated with emotional intelligence.

The researchers found significant overlap between general intelligence and emotional intelligence, both in terms of behavior and in the brain. Higher scores on general intelligence tests corresponded significantly with higher performance on measures of emotional intelligence, and many of the same brain regions were found to be important to both.

How to stay in a bad mood

How to stay in a bad mood | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it
Bad moods hit me like summer storms. They’re sudden, devastating and usually short. I’m a roller coaster type of person, with sensational highs and frightening lows. But what my unconscious tries hardest to avoid is boredom.

As emotions are addictive, I unconsciously prefer to feel down rather than neutral. Another option would be to seek happiness but it requires too much effort. It’s way easier to be in a bad mood. So my unconscious has devised schemes to make sure I keep feeling miserable rather than bored.

Allow Yourself to Feel | Heal Now and Forever

Allow Yourself to Feel | Heal Now and Forever | ISO Mental Health & Wellness | Scoop.it

One of the most powerful things you can do for healing is to allow yourself to feel. An unfelt, unresolved feeling, especially one we judge to be pathological can reek havoc on our emotions, our relationships, and our identity. We might not be feeling, but it feels like we are since we are suffering so badly. How would our lives be different if we just allowed ourselves to feel? “If you don’t start a feeling, you cannot take that feeling to an end,” says Women, Food, and God, author, Geneen Roth. If we don’t feel, we are cheating ourselves of the relief of finishing it. In a way, the feeling is chasing us, merely one step behind, keeping us moving, fighting, going in a perpetual state of stress since we cannot let down our guards lest it catch up.

...To be perfectly clear, I’ve always been an emotional person. You know—touchy feely, crying when Old Yeller died, etc.

But being emotional and emotionally connected to self are two completely different things.

Being emotional meant I took everything personally. This made intense relationships with the opposite sex agonizing. Every little argument meant she didn’t love me and was walking out the door...
