Google's Redefinition of the Browser As Platform

Google's Redefinition of the Browser As Platform | @iSchoolLeader Magazine | Scoop.it

The company's vision of the browser as a universal platform has driven remarkable technology innovation and has pushed Chrome into first place in the new browser wars.

Additionally, the distinction between regular apps and browser apps is getting increasingly difficult to define. If you find this direction, as well as compiling and running C++ apps in the browser, as interesting as I do, Google Chrome is the browser of choice to participate in the revolution.

The NJ Spotlight Roundtable Series: Teacher Tenure & Evaluation: A Progress Report | @iSchoolLeader Magazine | Scoop.it

New Jersey's overhaul of teacher tenure is now law, changing how educators are measured and evaluated -- as well as how they are rewarded and disciplined. More than two dozen districts are already piloting evaluation systems; the rest of the state must decide how it will fulfill the law in the next two months.

The NJ Spotlight Roundtable Series brings together educators and key players to discuss progress so far, including the chief architect of the law, state Sen. Teresa Ruiz, and the director of education evaluation for the Christie administration, Timothy Matheney.

Google Now is about giving you just the right information at just the right time. It can show you the day’s weather as you get dressed in the morning, or alert you that there’s heavy traffic between you and your butterfly-inducing date—so you’d better leave now! It can also share news updates on a story you’ve been following, remind you to leave for the airport so you can make your flight and much more. There’s no digging required: cards appear at the moment you need them most—and the more you use Google Now, the more you get out of it.

Google Now for iPhone and iPad is available as part of the updated Google Search app. Together, Google Now and voice search will make your day run a little smoother.

The Only App I Couldn't Live Without: LastPass Password Manager (Make sure to upgrade to premium)

The Only App I Couldn't Live Without: LastPass Password Manager (Make sure to upgrade to premium) | @iSchoolLeader Magazine | Scoop.it

Passwords have gotten so complicated that even people with ferociously sharp memories can struggle to recall the eccentric combinations of letters, numbers, and symbols. There are passwords for personal e-mail, work e-mail, bank accounts, Twitter, and Facebook, and woe to anybody who uses the same one for those two malware magnets. On top of that, it's recommended that you regularly change your passwords so they don't get compromised. Passwords are a pain, but LastPass slices through the Gordian knot of password management with a deft and effective cross-platform browser add-on/app/online password manager and form filler that makes web browsing easier and more secure. Although I prefer it on Chrome and iOS, LastPass is also available for Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari, your descktop, and on Android.

The bottom line: Effective, secure, and easy to use, LastPass offers a broad base of password-management features for free that can be expanded when upgrading to the premium version. It's an essential add-on for modern Web browsing.

How Twitter is Reinventing Collaboration Among Educators

How Twitter is Reinventing Collaboration Among Educators | @iSchoolLeader Magazine | Scoop.it

Before the advent of Twitter, most educators I know had limited opportunities to collaborate with colleagues outside their building. Some subscribed to listservs or participated in online forums, but these outlets lacked critical mass; teachers also networked at in-person conferences and training sessions, but these isolated events didn't provide ongoing support.

Enter Twitter. I've heard many educators say that Twitter is the most effective way to collaborate and that they've learned more with Twitter than they have from years of formal professional development.

Andreas Kuswara's curator insight, April 17, 9:22 PM

twitter alone might not be sufficient, as we (or most of us) not 'always online', we have to do other things. combining twitter with a mechanism to comb through the # and compile personalized feed, would be useful.

Catherine Smyth's comment, April 23, 9:20 PM
I'm a fledgling tweeter but love the way Twitter ignites discussion and ideas within a professional community.
Laura Conley's curator insight, April 29, 1:28 PM
