Bill Gates has shared some thoughts on the iPad again, during a CNBC interview – this time claiming that lots of iPad users are frustrated at their lack of ability to do things like type or create documents.

Apple held their Q2 2013 results conference call yesterday afternoon. I listened in to most of it live and as always there were lots of impressive numbers thrown around for all of Apple’s core products.

Reading this Guardian article makes you wonder whether some people are getting out of their way to use the iPad as a laptop or whether there are real benefits to do this. But this idea of "curated computing" where fewer features bring more focus is making its way in professionals IT habits: on top of being a lighter device than a laptop, maybe another value added by the iPad is that you don't get constant distraction when you try to create something? Through adding a keyboard or through specific apps, it's fair to comment however that mobile devices - tablets in particular - increasingly are creation devices and not just consumption ones. According to the latest data from IDC, global shipments of smart connected devices exceeded a billion units in 2012, an increase of 29.1% from the previous year and representing a value of $576.9 billion.

Chitika Insights measured tablet web traffic during the week of January 19 to 25 in the US and Canada and the iPad had by far the highest usage at 81% with the Kindle Fire at 7.7%.

Interesting to see the discrepency with shipment numbers from IDC as Chuck Jones points out in Forbes. Shipments and usage are two very different things on tablets.

In my house we have iPads, Kindles and Nexus tablets by far the iPads get the most use in of all age groups. From grandkids to grandpa it comes down to easy of use. Delete the scoop?

The Edge is a unique portable gaming PC. It's a Windows 8 tablet. It's a home gaming console. It's a laptop. And it fills all of those roles remarkably well. The Edge will be available by March, starting at $999.

The specs of the new Winbdows tablets look awesome for hardcore gamers - nothing like mobile OS, this time it's for real as apparently they can run "real" PC games - not lighter versions. Ths being said, the challenge is huge as iOS devices and to a lesser extent Android ones have become the portable gaming consoles of choice, relegating the PSP and the DS to niches like kids or casual gamers. So I wonder whether we'll see the same thing that happened to the video industry in the 80's/90's where the PC took over the hardcore gamers and later the online players from the consoles. What do you think gamers? Will you spend the $999 for a device like this or will you stick to Angry Birds on the iPad? Delete the scoop?

Beyond the Maps disaster, it's the whole Web service strategy of Apple which is being questionned by analysts. While the App model has been fueling the growth of the iOS platform so far, the cloud is where the long-term growth is and services like iCloud - not to quote Maps - have been far from convincing as alternatives to Dropbox or equivalent Google or Amazon services. For tablets, this is all the more important that they're supposed to be one of the forms of the "network computer" people like Larry Ellison have been predicting since 1995 - relying on the could for services rather than local native Apps. Another take - this one by John Gruber on Daring Fireball - on why the Daily failed. He points out lack of audience clarity and the focus on a single platform. While the first one is obvioulsy essential for any business, I'm not sure about the last one as a general statement. Some publishing businesses have thrived focusing on the Web only - even when the Web was much younger. I prefer his closing comment on the size of the team compared to the overall opportunity: this wasn't a way to do a lean experimentation of this market while allowing for adjustments and pivots. The world's first iPad-only newspaper may also be its last. To no one's surprise, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. announced Monday that The Daily will cease publication on Dec. 15 after less than two years in existence.

There goes what probably was the most publicized iPad launch in the publishing segment. As this Slate article points out, it probably shows that even though the iPad will definitely help create new forms of journalism and news consumption experience, it will also not save the traditional media industry without significant changes. I can't comment too much on the format, not being an avid reader of the soon-to-be-defunct title but what struck me from the start was how a high-cost organization it seemed to have. Launching a new title and trying to make it revolutionary, News Corp should probably have handeld this attemp like a startup. And maybe that's what they called it internally (corporate giants like to think their doing internal startups...). But startups have a word for trying be efficient, growing once they've proven some assumptions, investing when it makes sense, taking risks but also measuring them: it's called lean. The Daily didn't seem to me to be a lean startup at all. So while the Daily failure is certainly not good news for those who saw the iPad as a way to save the news publishing world, it doesn't mean we should overlook the other attempts : I'm sure we'll see some pure-iPad players successes as well but they will probably be structured very differently than traditionnal media organizations. The 500 Startups-backed app analytics firm SearchMan is debuting a new tool for mobile developers looking to quickly get a sense of how discoverable their application is inside App Store Search. This metric is more important than ever, following the changes to the iOS 6 App Store in September which have impacted developer rankings by removing or moving sections around and introducing a card-like interface to replace lists, among other things. How do you know if users are searching for your keywords and how many? And how well you rank on all these keywords? People do not like to be constrained in a "walled garden" approach...

The iPad still dominates tablets but as far as Android is concerned, you can't ignore the Amazon App store anymore. Now, I wonder whether that success is not detrimental to the Android platform overall: this makes me think at how fragmented the OS is compared to the simple and easy iOS. Will small developers with limited resources really go after Android or just reject it as long as the opportunity doesn't seem clearer? Delete the scoop?

This piece is interesting as a nice recap of the arguments for and agains native Apps (vs HTML5). Mark Sigal of Unicorn Labs summarizes the argument this way: "Simply put, there is no universal truth in the mobile web vs. mobile native debate, and no “one right way,” despite what the pontificators would have you believe." His lists of pro's and con's is good but I think he underestimates the importance of search discoverability which is a big con for Apps. As he rightly points out, the top 25 mobile App publishers make 50% of what Apple pays out to publishers. What would the Web be without Search but a boring short-term of 25 services? A new study finds that the use of computers and Facebook are more associated with information overload than the use of television and iPhones.

Interesting study that shows that the perception of having information overload might be impacted by what device you use to read content - the computer being very different than new mobile devices which by design offer more of a curated experience.
