A great post summarising the most important characteristics that a leader should have.

Leadership skills can be taught, however true leaders can only be few as it is indeed hard to strike a balance among all these traits.

Frank J. Papotto, Ph.D.'s curator insight, July 24, 2013 1:51 PM

These tips can be summed up by pointing out that great leaders realize that they must continually improve. Consequently, they must remain open to others and new perspectives while continuing to clearly convey in words and actions what they value and believe to be important for the future of their business.

Daniel Watson's curator insight, April 2, 10:14 PM

A lot has been written in recent times on the subject of employee engagement, and business owners generally don't have the time to digest all the nuances embedded in the copious quantity of information available, so the essence of what is important is of more use to the average business owner.

Simply distilling  the information available relating to improving employee engagement levels, does not provide any form of guidance as to what to prioritise to make an earlier difference, therefore a different approach is needed.

This excellent article by a practicing global director of employee engagement, suggests that by connecting the brand and employees a business owner can make meaningful progress towards improving employee engagement levels, and it outlines the five areas of focus that are key steps to making this happen sooner rather than later.

Daniel Watson's curator insight, November 28, 2013 6:57 PM

Most small businesses that employ staff, find that the level of motivation in individuals can vary remarkably, and even for individuals their motivation levels can rise or fall dramatically over time.

Sometimes it is hard for business owners to understand what motivates or demotivates their employees, and given the complex science behind motivational theory, it is not surprising that articles on the subject can be very weighty and at times incomprehensible.

This excellent article, suggests that trust is the key factor in determining staff motivation, and it provides a simple infographic that very neatly sums up the whole subject to allow a better understanding of the basics of employee motivation.

Spread the Word: Teamwork Makes Life Better Every Day in Every Way!!

Greg Lustig's curator insight, October 23, 2013 7:05 AM

There is an old adage, there is no I in team.Unforunately, far too many business owners do not follow that axiom and  run their businesses as despot rulers. Not only ,does this create a negative culture ,it wastes the talents of its employees.

John Bean's curator insight, October 23, 2013 9:12 AM

Dan Watson and the article / author are right on - teamwork is a critical ingredient to any business' success.  The 6 team mate type discussion is definitely something to consider.

In essence - this also speaks to the power of true Diversity and Inclusion.  D&I is more of a business imperitive than a social cause - as to ignore D & I is to pay lip service to "team work", and "leaves money on the table".  The article through the 6 team mate types speaks to valuing diversity of opinion, style, and background; and inclusion as valuable to a highly performing team.

Daniel Watson's curator insight, July 30, 2013 6:11 AM

A very common gripe of business owners, is that the staff they have require the expenditure of too much management time, in order to achieve the outcomes expected from the business.

Unfortunately, unless business owners review the level of attention they pay to the recruitment process, they will forever be stuck with spending at least eighty percent of their time managing people and their problems.

This excellent article, suggests that business owners need to revisit their attitudes and aptitudes towards recruitment, and it provides sound advice on how to hire right the first time and what needs to be done to reduce the time spent managing people to no more than twenty percent of management time.

John Michel's curator insight, July 30, 2013 6:46 AM

If you find yourself managing too hard, chances are that the hiring process was too easy. It doesn't have to be that way. By focusing your efforts more effectively on the people equation, you can achieve results that can eliminate 80% of your problems.

Christiane Soto's curator insight, October 12, 2013 8:53 AM

Anytime a company is having difficulty in managing their workforce, the reason can usually be traced back to their hiring process
