Simon Passmore, Senior Development and Support Officer (Systems Team) ICT, Corporate Information and Technology Department at South Wales Police, has been using UserLock since 2006 and shares his opinion about IS Decisions software solution to secure and control access to Windows-based networks.
Academic institutions (universities, colleges, schools, training centers…) have a very specific IT challenge: In addition to their application environment, usually they also have to manage a network of free access workstations for the students / trainees.
For the larger establishments, this network can range anywhere between a few hundred and thousands of systems, rendering security and optimization essential.
UserLock, a software solution from IS Decisions, gives organizations the ways and means to efficiently enforce network access security as well as optimize workstation usage.
Installation, configuration, and management of software are large part of most system administrator’s jobs.

According to a report recently issued by Cisco Systems, 7 out of 10 young employees frequently ignore IT policies and two-thirds said they believe their company’s policies need to be modified. About 61 percent said corporate IT security isn’t their responsibility, believing it is that of their employer or the maker of their devices.
When migrating to Windows Server and Active Directory, former Netware network administrators are therefore surprised to discover that Windows offers no native feature to prevent or limit simultaneous logins to their new network. That is where UserLock comes in handy, with concurrent logins limitation features even more powerful than Netware’s native features. UserLock allows you to limit or prevent simultaneous logins to a Microsoft Windows network, per user, user group or per session type (workstation, terminal, interactive or VPN/RAS).

"UserLock locks down PCs, and does it well. This lightweight supplements Windows' Group Policy abilities and it does so via a familiar interface. Changes happen quickly, and the app also lets you record session histories.
It's an impressive product."
I have large number of lab systems — physical and virtual — and fortunately all running Windows OS. I use all these systems to run multiple SharePoint 2010 farms and a large test bed for load testing the SharePoint farms. So, when I perform load testing, I need to perform several tasks before I initiate the load tests. This includes anything from just remote restart of these systems to deploying software, etc. Also, for tasks such as starting physical machines on-demand, initializing virtual machines, and performing update operations, etc.
I needed a simple, light-weight software to do all this in an automated manner. IS Decisions RemoteExec 5.0 is a best fit here.
