Poetry Originals #8: Geraldine O'Kane - Latest News - Lagan Press

Poetry Originals #8: Geraldine O'Kane - Latest News - Lagan Press | The Irish Literary Times | Scoop.it
Geraldine O'Kane brings us two poems exploring the idea of leave-taking and lasting images in our Poetry Originals series. I
love you this muchI have photographed and filedyour every smile;of all the lemon scented wordsI’ve written and read about you,I have given no indication thatin purging my body, fillingwhite pages with our reality,I am in fact making room inside myselfto slot in the spots of maternal lovethat spurt sporadically from you.Further proof of this;I cannot even considerthe thought of your passing. In cases wherethe notion flails across my mind,I instantly ask God for forgiveness,in case the thought alonecauses an avalanche of irrevocable damageto us both. The sicker and older you become, the more words I process;leaving an oversized room inside me,aching to be filled. This MorningAt 5 a.m. this morningI know you were a toasted marshmallow, melted under the covers in pink pyjamaswith black dots. Your hair,a sprawling arch across the pillow, fizzy with static as it always is.But now I am on the plane.I realise if I were never to see you again, this image would never hold up;for I never saw you, I gave you no last look, 'have a safe trip'' or 'see you soon',just 'goodbye'.
