“What is the language using us for?” The poet W. S. Graham’s question came unexpectedly to mind recently during a long car journey with two bookish friends, one of whom came up with an admittedly pretentious word game to help pass the time.
The three of us took turns to name an author, living or dead, whose name has inspired an adjective, as in “Pinteresque”. The first alphabetic round went something like this: Audenesque, Beckettian, Chekhovian, Dickensian, Eliotian (after T. S. Eliot, though there was some support for “Eliotic”), Freudian, Gravesian, Homeric, Ionescian, Joycean and so on, omitting X and ending with Zolaesque. Then we started all over again: Artaudian, Brechtian, Conradian, etc. The time certainly passed but the cumulative effect was at first alarming and then depressing. Where were the women writers?
