Shearsman Books - Niamh O'Mahony - Essays on the Poetry of Trevor Joyce

Shearsman Books - Niamh O'Mahony - Essays on the Poetry of Trevor Joyce | The Irish Literary Times | Scoop.it
Published 2015. Paperback, 242pp, 9 x 6ins.

ISBN 9781848613362 [Download a sample PDF from this book here.]

Essays on the Poetry of Trevor Joyce is the first collection of critical responses to an Irish poet whose writing consistently challenges received ideas of Irish poetry.

The contributions that make up this collection span Joyce's writing career, from Sole Glum Trek (1967) to Rome's Wreck (2014), and are written by literary critics, poets, and publishers. These essays illuminate Joyce's poetry, aligning careful reading with insightful analysis to reveal Joyce as one of Ireland's most innovative and creative living poets.

Contributors to this volume include: Lucy Collins, Eric Falci, Fergal Gaynor, John Goodby, Fanny Howe, David Lloyd, Peter Manson, Niamh O'Mahony, Marthine Satris, Geoffrey Squires, Keith Tuma and Jeffrey Twitchell Waas.

Caitriona Lally on Eggshells

Caitriona Lally on Eggshells | The Irish Literary Times | Scoop.it
I began 2014 with an almost-completed first novel, Eggshells, pieced together from jottings on scraps of paper that made their way into different-sized notebooks and eventually into a book. The previous October, I had entered the Irish Writers' Centre Novel Fair competition. I was now jobless, and as a distraction, I worked on another draft of Eggshells. It wasn't hard to motivate myself to write; job-hunting is frustrating and tedious, even more so when you have no idea what you want to do or where you want to do it. When Brendan from the Irish Writers Centre called to say I was one of the finalists, I shrieked like a wounded banshee. The decibel levels were so high, I may owe Brendan the price of a hearing test. I hadn't really allowed myself to think about winning the competition; I hadn't so much as a paragraph published in my name.…

WishesKeeping you in the house is not enough. You are so frigid that I hardly know you anymore. I am alone without your arms, lips, mouth.I take you to the end of the pier to release you. Over the water you rear up unexpectedly on the windturning back to embrace me                   like you did that first summer in Brighton when we vowed to spend forevertogether.                   You leave me.Breathing you in. WitnessDawn shrinks shadows – its thin light hunting out shapes. We follow. Shh … there in that scrub! And then in the undergrowth a zebra husk and a shock of blood-hooded bandits brandishing a bounty of sniggers and hackled shrieks. A single limb clots red as they jostle hierarchies. We crouch behind acacia.Eyes blink at shutter speed – recording every rip and squeal. The moon crawls away.
