A music biz roman-a-clef set in the badlands of Brixton squats, it vividly captures the cut-throat hedonism of the Irish ex-pat bohemian scene in mid-to-late ’80s London. Here’s a piece I wrote when it was [...]

NPR Book News: Desmond O'Grady, Irish Poet (And Fellini Bit Actor), Dies

NPR Book News: Desmond O'Grady, Irish Poet (And Fellini Bit Actor), Dies | The Irish Literary Times | Scoop.it
    • The nomadic Irish poet Desmond O'Grady, who had a bit part in Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita, has died, The Irish Times reports. O'Grady lived much of his life abroad, in Paris, Italy (where he met Fellini), the U.S. and Egypt. He told an interviewer: "James Joyce left. So I too had to." Irish President Michael D. Higgins said in a tribute, "From wherever he was writing, be it Cairo or Kinsale, his work invoked a sense of what was Irish in both heritage and contemporary life." In his poem "The Spaniard Inn," O'Grady wrote, "It took me forty years of world wander / before I shipped in here and dropped anchor. / Some voice amid life whispers where to scuttle."

'Shooting Snipe on Parnell Street' by John Liddy

From the house on Janesboro height My father recalled hearing hunters shooting For snipe in fields around Parnell Street.

He could see the river beyond through gaps In the city landscape and noted several Species of fowl nesting in the creeks.

I used to think about this walking south Passed the new estates and one night I saw a fox with a field-bird in its mouth

Crossing the street between honking cars And shouts from late night revellers Before disappearing off one of the lanes

Where I could make out a hunter’s shadow Skulking in pursuit to retrieve his prey, Crossing what was once a flowing meadow.
