Irish in India
The Story: The Global Irish Economic Forum meets in Dublin Castle next week. At its 2011 meeting Eamon Gilmore called ‘the global Irish’ . . . ‘a vast source of soft power for this country’. What did the Tánaiste mean by ‘the global Irish’ and what is their story? Your task: You’re working for a team of journalists to produce a feature article on the global Irish since St Patrick and your job is to research the information. You have 30 minutes to use the resources provided. Your goal: Create a collection of sources on Scoop-it - documents, articles, photographs, links to other sources, online sources, sound files, etc. How many? That’s up to you! A few ideas to get you started . . . Who were the global Irish? Identify a significant person or persons. Where they were living? Locate the Irish overseas - how far flung are we and When were we there? Zanzibar, Timbuktu, you name it, we’ve been there! What have they done for Ireland? Find an entrepreneur, a writer, a politician, journalist, a soldier, a diplomat, a missionary or a business personality and tell what they did? How has Ireland viewed the global Irish? What did we back in Ireland think of our diaspora? Some keywords to help your search . . . Concepts: diaspora, overseas, emigration, emigrant, emigrate, wild geese, loss, Irish Colleges, missionaries, colony, colonisation, propaganda, settler, ports, discovery, exploration, frontier, famine, Irish community, Irish descent, birth, nationality, citizenship, passport. Countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Britain, Canada, England, France, India, New Zealand, Portugal, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, United States of America. People: Maeve Brennan, Theobald Wolfe Tone, St Bridget, Samuel Beckett, Mother Mary Gonzaga Barry, John F Kennedy, Daisy May Bates, Edward Phelan, Mary Harris Jones (‘Mother Jones’), John Dulanty, Nora Barnacle.
