Cyborg Elmo Wants to Teach Kids to Code, Not Exterminate Humanity

Cyborg Elmo Wants to Teach Kids to Code, Not Exterminate Humanity | iPhones and iThings | Scoop.it
Elmo is now a robot who wants to teach toddlers to code. He sort of looks like the terminator, but really, he just wants to teach kids basic logic and problem solving skills, instead of the standard A-B-Cs.
RJ Marmol's insight:
I'm always down for anything that will encourage and inspire kids to code. Let's face it, they'll be immersed in longer screen time anyway as parents hustle to secure their success in the now very uncertain future of AR and AI and robotics in general, what with these tin cans of the past now proving to be more efficient than humans will ever be.. so yes please, one Cyborg Emo over here!

Your 2017 Social Media Strategy: Don't Try To Be Everywhere At Once

Your 2017 Social Media Strategy: Don't Try To Be Everywhere At Once | iPhones and iThings | Scoop.it

I recently wrote an article about how you can "crush it" on social media in 2017--and the real truth everyone needs to hear in terms of actually seeing a worthwhile return on your investment.

However, based on the amount of people who have reached out asking how to formulate effective social media strategies for the new year, I thought it would be helpful to dive a bit more into the weeds.

Cutting right to the core, here is the number one rule every single business, brand, freelancer and online influencer needs to remember when it comes to social media marketing:

Don't try to be everywhere at once....

Via Jeff Domansky
RJ Marmol's insight:
This is a great advice. I have been thinking about this myself for the past months and have seen firsthand how much value and results you'll get if you focus your attention on at least one (or maybe two at most) social media platforms. I've spread myself too thin everywhere and never really gotten results even if I've been on many platforms for many years now. YouTube is a prime example. I've been on there since 2007 yet I've never really paid attention to my channel and I regret it. So for 2017, my goal would be to "crush it" on at least one of these platforms.

The Chinese army garrisoned in Hong Kong has warned people searching for Pikachu and other virtual monsters to stay off their premises, as Pokemon Go mania sweeps the smartphone-obsessed city.

"Military barracks are restricted areas under Hong Kong law. Without the authorisation of the commanding officer, no one is allowed to enter the restricted areas," he told AFP.  -- Makes sense!

Giphy Launches New 'Giphy Keys' iOS Keyboard to Easily Share Animated GIFs

Giphy today launched its own iOS keyboard, called Giphy Keys, that will let users search for and send GIFs without having to navigate to a separate keyboard application. Once users install Giphy Keys as a new keyboard in settings -- and allow it full access -- the app can be selected as a keyboard by tapping the globe icon whenever the keyboard is open on iOS.
The advantage of Giphy Keys is that anyone who constantly navigated through multiple keyboards to type messages and search for GIFs can now do both in one place. The top of the keyboard has a search functionality to find a GIF related to a specific topic, but Giphy also provides various categories related to moods or trends whenever you don't have a specific GIF in mind.
GIPHY Keys is the easiest and fastest way to browse, search, and share GIFs in your text messages -- right from your keyboard! Not only do you have access to GIPHY's collection of millions of GIFs, you can play with our special GIPHY commands to make and discover so much more awesome content. Similar to other GIF apps, once a user finds their desired GIF, all that needs to be done is a simple copy and paste into the message field and then hit the send button. Giphy Keys also introduces a new 8ball tab, where users can ask the app a question and receive an answer in GIF form. The section also gives weather forecasts for specific zip codes, and can animate words and phrases, all with GIFs.
For users who integrate GIFs into every corner of their iOS messaging experience -- from iMessage to Snapchat and other clients -- Giphy Keys should be a helpful addition to their daily perusal and sending of the popular animated format. Those interested can download Giphy Keys from the App Store for free [Direct Link].

RJ Marmol's insight:
I'd say design-wise, this is sleeker than the existing VR headsets in the market. The price point while still unknown beyond the promise that it'll be less than $400, seem reasonable. This is something I would like to test out in the future. For now though, release date is still tentatively set to "later this year".

Five Unexpected Stats About Social Media from 2016 - eMarketer

Five Unexpected Stats About Social Media from 2016 - eMarketer | iPhones and iThings | Scoop.it
Each year brings huge changes in social media, and 2016 was no exception. Here are five social stats from 2016 that will take you by surprise.
Via Jeff Domansky
RJ Marmol's insight:
I think the result why social ecommerce is big in Southeast Asia is the fact that most online transactions happen within this social networking apps -- more specifically, Facebook. Since over here, your customers are definitely on Facebook, not only is it the best choice for online selling for that reason alone, but it also helps to understand that many Southeast Asian small businesses hardly even sell within their main website. Also, many small entrepreneurs, especially those who do buy and sell, don't even have a website of their own and are happily using their Facebook pages as their main online store.

Linden Labs Looks to Create 'Wordpress for Social VR' - The Blog Herald

Linden Labs Looks to Create 'Wordpress for Social VR' - The Blog Herald | iPhones and iThings | Scoop.it

Second Life is a online game that immerses players in a virtual world. For the past thirteen years, more than 90,000 players have entered the online community. Now, Linden Labs, the company behind the unique game is looking to enter the realm of virtual reality.

With the popularity of virtual reality headsets, there is an important need for companies to create software to go along with the new technology. That’s where Linden Labs comes in.

Creating software for VR is a hefty task and is pretty much impossible for small companies or organizations. Linden Labs is hoping to help those little guys out by creating what they call a ‘WordPress for Social VR’.

RJ Marmol's insight:
I personally haven't tried Second Life but it's been highly recommended by friends. I just might try this today. No VR yet but this should be interesting all the same.
