Fujifilm XF16mm lens - picture samples and first thoughts | Damien Lovegrove

Fujifilm XF16mm lens - picture samples and first thoughts | Damien Lovegrove | Iphoneography | Scoop.it

I’ve been fortunate enough to have a couple of copies of the new Fujifilm XF16mm prime lens so far. The first was a pre production unit I picked up in Japan back in February and I later swapped it out for a newer version at The Photography Show last month in Birmingham. My latest copy has serial number 00029 from the final production run. It came boxed and is in full retail guise. I’ve shot over 1000 frames with XF16mm lenses so far and I love this lens. I’ll be linking the shots here in this blog post to their full size counterparts as soon as I’m allowed to do so. The full res images sparkle with clarity and will delight the pixel peepers among you. My idea of lens evaluation doesn’t dwell on the microscopic but uses a more holistic approach. I choose a lens because of the way it translates the three dimensional world into a two dimensional image. The overall look and feel of the images a lens captures are of utmost importance. I love to print my work too and the process of producing prints is the most telling step in image quality evaluation......

Fujifilm XF 16mm F1.4 moves from roadmap to retailers | Iphoneography | Scoop.it

Another lens from Fujifilm's roadmap is making its way to retailers, and that's the XF 16mm F1.4 R WR wide prime. This lens, equivalent to 24mm, has a nine-blade aperture, flare-reducing Nano-GI coating, and a minimum focusing distance of 15cm/6 in. There's also a manual aperture ring and depth-of-field scale. Being a WR lens, the 16mm is also sealed against weather and dust and can function at temperatures as low as -10C/+14F.

The XF 16mm F1.4 R WR will be available next month for $999.95.

Views of Kenya with the Fujinon XF 16mm f/1.4 WR | Matt Brandon

Views of Kenya with the Fujinon XF 16mm f/1.4 WR | Matt Brandon | Iphoneography | Scoop.it

So just before I left for Kenya, I got a WhatsApp message from my contact at Fujifilm Malaysia telling me they had the yet-to-be-released Fujinon XF 16mm f/1.4 WR. I have been waiting for this lens since it showed up on the Fujifilm Lens Road Map. A 16mm f/ 1.4? That’s a lot of light!  But the real question was going to be, would I feel it was wide enough? Let’s face it, a 16mm lens on the X-system is effectively a 24mm in 35mm-speak and I generally like shooting wide. I like fast even better. This lens has not disappointed me. I really wanted to write this review before leaving and post it the day the lens was officially announced, but unfortunately I got the lens only the day before I left for Kenya and I have been working on an OFMP training everyday since I arrived. I was able to carve out a few moments here and there to put this little guy through some of it’s paces......

56 WITH THE 56 | FUJIFILM XF 56MM F1.2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS | V.OPOKU

56 WITH THE 56 | FUJIFILM XF 56MM F1.2 FIRST IMPRESSIONS | V.OPOKU | Iphoneography | Scoop.it

Fujifilm XF 56mm f/1.2 – I have been flirting with this lens for about 5 months now but I don’t own a copy yet which is a bit of a surprise considering the fact that I have always had a thing for fast-short-telephoto lenses; an 85mm f/1.4s has always been part of my professional kit – I have owed a Carl Zeiss Planar and a Nikkor 85mm in the past. The inclusion of this lens in my kitbag should have be a no-brainer, heck this use to be my favourite focal length, however it hasn’t worked out that way. I have spent the past 2 years documenting 99% of my work with just the XF 35mm f/1.4 and the X100S with its native 23mm lens. As a result, the FOV of 50mm and 35mm have become natural to me. I can pre-visualise images at these field of views even before I take them – “this will look good at 35mm and that will look better at 50mm.” I wouldn’t say I have mastered seeing everything through these perspectives yet, but I have a rough idea of how an image is going to look even before I raise a camera to my eye. I feel “at home” shooting at 35mm &  50mm. I contemplated on switching things up and going with 35mm + 85mm combination this season – a popular choice amongst many wedding photographers, but…
