Authored by leading journalists from the BBC, Storyful, ABC, Digital First Media and other verification experts, the Verification Handbook is a groundbreaking new resource for journalists and aid providers. It provides the tools, techniques and step-by-step guidelines for how to deal with user-generated content (UGC) during emergencies.

Voyant Tools: Reveal Your Texts

Voyant Tools: Reveal Your Texts | Technology for Language Learning | Scoop.it

This is a very interesting tool for analysing text and word frequency in text. It enables you to create your own mini corpus and see how words are used in context.

Randy Rebman's curator insight, December 15, 2012 4:54 PM

This tool allows you to easily export the concordance lines into a text file. Provided the text was either online or in a text file, it also makes identifying vocabulary words in texts easier. As a corpus tool on the web, I find the option of being able to upload multiple texts into the corpus one of the benefits of the site. But this tool is still in Beta mode, so there may still be some kinks with it that need worked out.

Blake Turnbull's curator insight, May 18, 2013 8:43 PM

The U.S. Department of State has developed this free online game for learning English vocabulary and (American) culture for youths. Had a brief look, but a username and password is required, however this can be easily created for free with little effort. Potentially a very good idea if it can take off in foreign English learning countries!

Knowble Articles

Knowble Articles | Technology for Language Learning | Scoop.it
Improve your English skills. Sign up for free and start reading news articles at your proficiency level!

Via Nik Peachey
Stewart Whitney's insight:

Pretty cool. I signed up and tried it out. I tried to imagine what it would be like for my students. So I aborted the vocabulary test after only 5 questions. The articles still contained a lot of difficult vocabulary and structures, but learners can set the support language to their L1. I tried Japanese as the support language. The site automatically highlights difficult vocabulary and when you move the cursor over the work, it gives you a translation (using Google translator) and some example sentences.

It's not perfect. It misses a lot of phrasal verbs (e.g. only gives a definition of the main verb and excludes the preposition) and different usage of words, but overall, still pretty cool.

It'll get better. These things usually do. On another note, I just made the best cup of coffee!
Remy Lamers's comment, June 6, 2013 6:25 AM
I'm Remy and I work at the company that invented and developed Knowble. We think it's great that so many of you appreciate Knowble and making the effort to give feedback.

To date we haven't found a proper method to make phrasal verbs work properly. We do consider adding phrasal verbs, but the sheer endless combinations of verbs, context and meaning make this a very though nut to crack. Also; Knowble is designed as a supplementary learners aid instead of an alternative language course. That's why we focus on what Knowble does best; improving vocabulary by reading news articles.

This free version of Knowble offers a rudimentary pre-test. We have developed specific versions with better pre-tests for our clients, such as publishers. These versions also include target word lists, specific resources and translations from dictionaries (instead of Google translation used in the free version). In the paid version of Knowble teachers can also view the progress of individual students.

Still, we hope that our free version of Knowble will continue to help people improve their English in a pleasant way.

Keep your feedback coming!

Thanks, Nik, and sorry if I raised unnecessary doubts about this service; I suppose we all need to boost our digital literacy, and being able to figure out if a web tool is safe is one of the key skills, isn't it? Cheers!
Nik Peachey's comment, April 29, 2013 5:10 AM
Hi Amadeu. No problem. It's always a good idea to check every source before signing up. I work very quickly and often forget so it's good to remind me. I usualy stay away from services which require me to sign in through another service, but this looks really good so I made an exception.
