The Smart Way to Use iPads in the Classroom - Slate Magazine

The Smart Way to Use iPads in the Classroom - Slate Magazine | iPads, Apps, Innovation, and Education | Scoop.it
Slate Magazine The Smart Way to Use iPads in the Classroom Slate Magazine As part of a tour to talk about my book, Screen Time, I was treated to three days of visits to nearly a dozen classrooms at the Zurich International School, a private school...

Brian H. Burnett's insight:

Children are being able to show what’s in their minds by adding the oral explanation,” he said. “That’s off-the-charts amazing.” Particularly helpful, he said, is to watch the recordings made by young children and English-language learners—students who may not speak up much in class but can actually show deep learning when asked to interview each other or record what they know. But most eye-opening, he said, is watching children have their own “aha” moments after watching recordings of themselves and talking to teachers about what they were thinking at the time."

"This notion of using the iPad to make learning visible is not without hiccups, however—particularly when it comes to filming and editing. Despite all the talk about kids being “digital natives” who can navigate iPads before they can walk, teaching children to create videos isn’t easy. When I watched the first-graders complete their assessment on systems, one girl’s videos wouldn't save at first—a technical problem that could have dissolved into a meltdown if a teacher had not been sitting right next to her to help. “It gave me gray hairs,” said a first-grade teacher about those first few weeks teaching iMovie to 6-year-olds. But she quickly added that the extra time was worth it."

10 Tools to Create Beautiful Infographics and Visualize Data - noupe

10 Tools to Create Beautiful Infographics and Visualize Data - noupe | iPads, Apps, Innovation, and Education | Scoop.it

They used to say content is king. But what really makes up content? Gone are the days when “content” meant purely text. Today, if you want to engage and enchant your customers, your content must have some visual cues. The human brain processes visual information much quicker than text. And with web 2.0 visuals like infographics, you can convey complex, boring data in a meaningful manner. Although infographics make things simpler, it can be time-consuming to create them. Here is a list of my top 10 tools to create your own beautiful infographics and more visual content (no Photoshop required!).

Though I've featured them each individually here on iPads in Education I thought it might be useful to post all of the series in one collection.

A New Fantastic Bloom's Taxonomy Wheel for iPad Apps ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

A New Fantastic Bloom's Taxonomy Wheel for iPad Apps ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | iPads, Apps, Innovation, and Education | Scoop.it

"Today while I was browsing through my Twitter feeds I came across this fabulous Bloom's Taxonomy wheel of apps shared by Anthony. If you still recall, some previous versions of this wheel have already been featured here in Bloom's Taxonomy for Teachers section .

As you can see, the wheel outlines a wide variety of verbs and activities related to each thinking level of Blooms taxonomy coupled with iPad apps that go with it. These apps are supposed to help teachers and students better cultivate these different thinking levels in their use of iPad apps. And because the the visual is not hyperlinked, I went ahead and provided the links for each of these apps in the lists below. Enjoy"

Theophilus's curator insight, March 19, 2014 4:03 AM

What I like about this idea is the centrality of learning as opposed to the centrality of the device. We've discovered that sharing a device have far-reaching and positive possibilities for networking, interaction, teamwork and collaboration in the formal learning environment. OLPC is an example of a notion that goes the other way - individualism, not to mention, the complexities when trying to enable young learners to focus.

The 4 Stages of Technology Integration: Supporting Student Growth.

New methods of using technology in the classroom can be adopted, but they don’t necessarily need be. Instead, technological integration in the classroom takes place along a sliding scale, a spectrum of integration.

That spectrum is summarized with the letters SAMR, which stands for Substitution, Augmentation,Modification, and Redefinition. These represent four different degrees of technological integration into learning, from slightly supplementing instruction to completely redefining what it means to teach.

"Publishing student video that is created with iPads can be a challenging process, especially with younger students. Even schools that are Google Apps typically decide to turn off YouTube uploads to the student accounts. However, with the use of a handful of free applications, students can create video content on iPad, share their creation with a teacher, and then have the teacher upload to their YouTube channel or a class YouTube channel.
