The Digital Writing Process

The Digital Writing Process | Digital Learning | Scoop.it

Now, with nearly 20 years of middle and high school teaching behind me, I still respect the writing process approach and its benefits. I also recognize that the nature of writing has changed tremendously over those two decades due to the significant influence of digital tools and sources. Of course, today’s composers still must meet the commonly accepted conventions of the genre in which they are engaged, but our visual digital culture creates different demands than did the primarily print text-based world.

Digital Communication Students's curator insight, December 4, 2015 7:00 AM

"The nature of writing has changed tremendously over those two decades due to the significant influence of digital tools and sources". We completely agree with this phrase. Our way of writing is changing more than we notice. I figure that adults notice this more than young people, because this last group were born with the Internet. Nevertheless, its very important to learn how to write properly, this article provides the tools and the practice we need.

I chose this one because it is important for me to understand how the writing process has become digital, considering how my students learn it through the computer.

The Future of E-Ducation: The Impact of Technology and Analytics on the Education Industry

This groundbreaking EdTech study examines the way that modern technology is bringing remarkable innovation into the educational sector; a field which has historically remained fairly fixed and traditional for centuries. The report analyses the degree to which education is being made into a universally accessible, innovative, personalized, and adaptive experience, and finds that the these changes will be pivotal for achieving the United Nations’ goal of universal education by 2015.

Spell Up. Speak to play and build up your English. | Digital Learning | Scoop.it
This is a great new game from Google which helps students develop their vocabulary through spelling and pronunciation. Using Chrome, students can actually speak to the computer and listen to the pronunciation of the words as they build a word tower. They can even listen to a speaking dictionary telling them what the words mean. This should get your students working autonomously to develop their own vocabulary and if they sign in they can track and share their results.

Moving at the Speed of Creativity | How to Share Videos from a School iPad Cart | Digital Learning | Scoop.it
"I visited with a K-3 librarian today who recently received a cart of iPads at her school for teachers to check out and use with students. She was unsure how to share videos the students create and save to their iPad camera rolls, however, with apps like iMovie, Puppet Pals, and Sock Puppets. In this post I’ll summarize my recommendations to her, which involve setting up a special Gmail account “for the cart” as well as a YouTube channel teachers and students can publish to with the free YouTube Capture app."

The 21st-Century Digital Learner

The 21st-Century Digital Learner | Digital Learning | Scoop.it

After hosting dozens of these conversations, I realize one thing: We just don't listen enough to our students. The tradition in education has been not to ask the students what they think or want, but rather for adult educators to design the system and curriculum by themselves, using their "superior" knowledge and experience.

Aunty Alice's curator insight, October 24, 2013 5:27 PM

Just as speaking is the outcome of listening, so writing is the outcome of reading, not the other way round. Listening to the student should also include "listening" to their writing. ie., analyse what they are saying and how they are doing it.  When students evaluate their own work, the teacher should listen and guide them to ways of improving it, whether it be punctuation, paragraphing, spelling, or word or subject knowledge.  This is how we bring students on board and empower them to learn.

Aunty Alice's curator insight, October 31, 2013 4:49 PM

Listening to students has two aspects; listening to what they say orally, and 'listening' to their writing which is only another way of talking, only through a code. Just as learning to speak is tied closely to listening to what is said and being exposed to words that help one to think better, so writing is the same  and relies on reading "or listening" to what others say and how they say it to express clear meaning. The two subjects, reading and writing, are closlely intertwined yet we compartmentalize them in the literacy curriculum. An example of adults thinking they know what is best for children.

ICTE Solutions Australia's curator insight, December 28, 2015 11:43 PM

In an ICT integrated society, it is important that people are information literate. That means being able to search for and analyse information for their benefits. As websites on the Internet become more popular teachers need to teach their students the right skills and knowledge so that their students are able to become information literate. Any guide therefore, that will assist teachers in doing so is worth using as a resource as reference for both teachers and students to use.

WEAC's curator insight, May 15, 2014 10:32 AM

Monique Markoff says: "Some would say in this model the teachers matter less since computers are taking over some of the instruction. But I actually think teachers matter more in this model. They are now the orchestrators of these complex learning paths, picking which program should go for which student. They have to now target all the skills that the computer can’t do.  How to motivate that child. How to connect what they’re doing to their home life."

Brian Romero Smith's curator insight, May 17, 2014 2:53 PM

You've heard of Blended Learning strategies by now along with all the other technology driven methods available. What this particle TED talk focuses on is building a model that encourages student led learning using technology, while the teacher serves as the motivator, and your guide for exploring the student's learning potential. The most important aspect however when trying to implement a Blended learning model,  is being flexible in its delivery and outcomes.  As there are many ways to  build your platform, just keep your students at the forefront of your decision making in order to Meet Them Where They Are.

As a trainer for online teachers, I couldn't agree more. While many foundational skills carry over, the methodology is very different and failure to learn how to "do it right" could mean disastrous results and disillusionment in the process.
