Inkling Co-founder and CEO Matthew MacInnis tells us that, two years ago, the team set out to build a publishing platform that would redefine digital media, starting with the reinvention of the textbook.
"Earlier this school year I began volunteering in my child’s Kindergarten class with my two iPads and a suite of apps that focused on early literacy skills. Now half way through the school year, I’ve discovered more about engaging kids with learning apps. You can read my first post, “iPads in Education – How you & your iPad can volunteer together in your child’s classroom” here: http://digital-storytime.com/wp/?p=916."
"It turns out that the iPad has some magic, invisible keys. They sit at the ragged ends left over as the keyboard splits and shrinks to the sides of the screen for easy thumb typing. If you hit the space to the side of the T key, for example, iOS will spit out the letter Y, just as if it were still there. These phantom keys continue down both sides, letting you access Y,T,H,G,B and V across the void in the center."
"Today, we learned that Adonit has released a ‘mini’ version of their Jot Stylus. This isn’t a short little mini pen or a hollow light weight stick. Instead, Adonit has removed just a little bit here and there, leaving the right amount of weight/size and especially their special writing tip."
"All indicators suggest Apple will unveil the iPad 3 during the first week of March.
So which apps might Apple use to show off the brilliance of its new display hardware? We've identified four key app categories that would be ideal for demo'ing the HD display. We've also spoken to software developers about their iPad 3 aspirations. None would spill any beans concerning launch-day involvement, but we did learn more about how the developer community is anticipating the new display."
"Here are five ideas for teaching numbers 1-10 using apps and mobile devices. The activities are aimed at young learners of English as a foriegn/additional language but could be adapted to other contexts."
"Take a look at the RCA USB Wall Plate Charger, a gadget which does exactly what it says on the label.
The charger is simple, and all the better for it. Round back is a standard 3-prong plug, which mates with any grounded socket in your or anybody else’s home. On the front of the rather utilitarian-looking box is a pass-through three-pin socket and a pair of USB ports. One of these ports will supply 2.1 amps of juice to charge the thirsty iPad, or you can hook up two of any other USB-powered device."
"This is a growing collection of free edu apps that are considered to be "surprisingly educational". Many are edutainment in nature. We have provided ideas for integration for each app (in our "appy hours 4 u" show) that span across content areas and multiple grade levels."
"The iPad is missing a calculator like our iPhones come with. Just a basic calculator that you replace the little plastic one on the desk with. It would be nice to have a couple features of course… maybe a tape, editing past calculations and the ability to share. It would appear the folks at Shift had the same need with their Digits Calculator."
"East Haven, Conn., reading specialist Gina Tomassi sits with second-grader Isaac Florentino for a quick reading evaluation, listening to him read a short story about a riverside village ... But on this recent morning at D.C. Moore Elementary School, it’s all done with the touch of an iPad."
