How to Quickly Fix Stuck Orientation on the iPad, iPhone, iPod touch

How to Quickly Fix Stuck Orientation on the iPad, iPhone, iPod touch | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Every once in a while an iOS device or app will get stuck in the wrong orientation, unresponsive to rotating the device and it either stays in portrait or horizontal mode, despite every effort to rotate the device any which direction. Though this seems to happen more often on the iPad than the iPhone or iPod touch, it can still occur on every iOS device and with just about any app."

5 Apps for Social Reading - AvatarGeneration

5 Apps for Social Reading - AvatarGeneration | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Social reading is revolutionizing the way anyone reads. While most participate in social media, such as Facebook or Twitter in their personal lives, social media in the form of social reading is expanding into the classroom, making reading more enjoyable and exciting for all readers young and old. The basis of social reading is simple, through the use of apps and devices reading goes beyond the actual words on the page and opens up a myriad of options for readers to share their thoughts, favorite quotes, and overall opinions of the things they have read. Social reading apps allow readers to connect and share, much like a book group, all through the use of technology. These 5 social reading apps make communicating about books and literature very simple and enjoyable all from the comforts of a tablet or smartphone."

Essential Anatomy 2 adds more systems, iPhone support, just in time for back to school

Essential Anatomy 2 adds more systems, iPhone support, just in time for back to school | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Just in time for the upcoming school season (and Apple's education promo) 3D4Medical has released Essential Anatomy 2 for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The most noticeable improvement, of course, is the iPhone support (EA1 was iPad-only). The first Essential Anatomy app (you can read my review of it here http://www.tuaw.com/2013/02/13/essential-anatomy-is-the-future-of-touch-based-anatomy-learning/ ) has become a staple of anatomy learning in the classroom. With the latest update to the app, it has become even more comprehensive. Now in addition to exploring the bones, muscles, connective tissue, nerves, arteries and veins in the body, the app has added the digestive and urinary systems."

8 Apps for a U.S. History Refresher - Mac|Life | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"The United States is a young nation with a rich history that we celebrate every July 4. If you were to base it just off the events of that day, though, you'd think it's just a country that prides itself in pyrotechnics and eating in excess. Obviously, there's plenty more to it than that. If you want to learn more about the historical context of the rocket's red glare, do it from the white glow of your iOS device. Need fodder for a spirited Fourth of July discussion? We've gathered eight apps that will walk you through the important moments of American history, teach you about all of the major players that helped shape it, provide firsthand accounts from those who experienced it, and much more."

How to Open Zip Files & Extract Archives on the iPhone & iPad

How to Open Zip Files & Extract Archives on the iPhone & iPad | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"If you’ve ever run into a .zip file on an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad you will probably have discovered it’s a bit of a dead-end initially, because by default there isn’t much you can do with zips or any other archive format. That doesn’t mean you can’t open ZIP files though, and in fact these archives can be viewed, unzipped, and opened in iOS with relative ease, but you will need to download a free third party app before you’ll have the function included on your device. This will allow you view all of the contents of any zip file quickly, and also decompress the entire archive, or just extract a single file from a larger archive, providing quick access to the zip contents which can be saved locally or opened in another application of choice."

Fetchnotes - A Free & Simple Notes App for Your iPad - iPad Apps for School | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Fetchnotes is a service for creating and organizing notes for yourself. Organizing your notes on Fetchnotes is quite simple. When you write a note, just use a hashtag to label your note. Then whenever you want to search for a note just enter a hashtag. For example, if I was a student taking notes in a history course I might use the hashtag “#revolution” for all notes related to revolutions. Then I could go back and read all of my notes about revolution by just searching for that hashtag."

Six Steps to Developing Your Own 21st Century Educational Technology -

Six Steps to Developing Your Own 21st Century Educational Technology - | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Over the course of the past few months, many educators, including myself, have been scrambling to meet the needs of the “21st century classroom” or the “technology-enriched classroom.”

As a field, we have discovered that our youth are adapting to a technologically advanced society, and as they progress, our educational system is falling further behind, quite literally, by the hour. As a solution, our principals and administrators have decided that we have a goal to reach, but ultimately, we’re the leaders of our classrooms, and we’re the ones who have to figure out how to turn our classrooms into technology-enriched environments, or move over for someone else who can."

Hack Education Ed-Tech Guide | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Yet all sorts of chasms remain between the realms of education and technology, between teachers and technologists. If we're to bridge that (and recognize that there may well be places where we can't, where missions and methods are irreconcilable) we should probably start by learning a bit more about one another -- a little bit more about the education and the technology components, as well as the business and politics, of ed-tech."

Sheffield universities team say iPad apps can help children learn to read

Sheffield universities team say iPad apps can help children learn to read | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Research conducted by Sheffield’s two universities has shown that iPads and other tablets can help children to develop reading skills from a very early age.

The researchers took iPads into school nurseries to watch how very young children explore storytelling apps.

Professor Jackie Marsh said the work was a collaboration between the two universities. “A team of us looked at iPads and how useful they are to promote children’s early reading. We worked in two school nurseries with children under three, using Storybook apps on iPad"

"Creating picture stories can be a very effective activity in unleashing students creativity. There are now some great apps that students can use to create and narrate their stories on iPad. I have picked for you two of the most popular apps in this regard.

To create a picture story, students will either use the pictures they have in their camera roll or take new ones and do some customization to them then add audio narration and text before sharing them with others via emails or through social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Here are the titles I have for you today:"
