In Their Own Words with Book Creator

In Their Own Words with Book Creator | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Today, the children decided to make a book about Pete the Cat and his new white shoes as a retelling.  They used a planning grid to map out their stories.  In Book Creator, they designed the cover and wrote their re-telling.  They illustrated their book by drawing in Doodle Buddy.  Once they finished their entire book, they went back and recorded themselves reading the story (and singing Pete’s song.) How to Find the Magic in an Educational App

How to Find the Magic in an Educational App | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"The concept of how to find the magic in an educational app came up recently during our weekly EducationalAppTalk forum. The question arose, “Why should educational apps be field-tested?” Teachers With Apps field test apps with kids on a regular basis and have found that most often it is the kids who find the MAGIC. The magic happens when really good content comes together with a fun and totally engaging interface. Neither can stand-alone; adults often miss critical components that children find naturally in the course of their play."

Idea Sketch - A Nice Mind Mapping App

Idea Sketch - A Nice Mind Mapping App | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Idea Sketch is a simple app for creating mind maps on your iPad. One of the features of Idea Sketch that stands out is the option to flip back and forth between a web format and an outline format. This makes the app a good choice for students who occasionally prefer to a linear outline instead of a web layout."

"Solve the Outbreak is a free iPad app produced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The app is a game that contains three epidemics for students to research. The questions put students in the role of a medical professional tasked with helping to curtail the spread of the epidemic. Points are awarded to students for correct answers."

Using iPad Screencasting for Feedback and Assessment - iPads in Education | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Screencasting is the process of capturing the screen interactions on your computer - usually along with an audio narrative. It's been a very effective method for creating screen based tutorials on computer for a number of years. With the advent of screencasting apps on the iPad, screencasting has now become a great option for the creation of multimedia student presentations."

What Does a 10 Year Old Do with an iPad mini? Read, Read, Read

What Does a 10 Year Old Do with an iPad mini? Read, Read, Read | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"I handed down my still-very-new iPad mini 32GB to my 10 year old daughter, Zoe, a little over a week ago – when I switched up to a 64GB model.

My original plan was to sell my 32GB iPad mini, which is in mint condition, to help cover the cost of the bigger model. Then I thought about how much use Zoe could get out of it, about the outstanding school year she has had as a 4th grader. About how she has been using an original iPad for years now and has become a real power user – and it didn’t take long to change my plan and give her the 32GB iPad mini."

Harness the power of new technology to teach kids in ways you never imagined.

Danny Dibdin's curator insight, March 25, 2013 6:26 PM

This is a great article which also has a video which discusses this new phenomenon of young children even toddlers using Ipads and Iphones and whether they are losing something from the typical tactile play, however gaining something from technology.
They discuss whether the use of an Ipad for a young toddler is more addictive than stimulating and engaging, and they discuss in the video whether this is just a new level of engagement and focus that should be seen as a means in which can be used in the educational environment.
There is a suggestion based on the idea that children are more engaged when it comes to a hands on approach and for some reason, touch-screen technologies are a more exciting approach for students in a class-room then the pen and paper means of learning.
As we can see, there is a new generation springing up that the article suggests children are spending on average ''7 hours'' a day using technology and therefore, what does this suggest about the educational field and our teachers pedagogical practices?

5 Best Apps for Math and Counting

5 Best Apps for Math and Counting | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"As a follow up to my post about writing apps (which you can click here to see) I thought I’d share some of the math and counting apps we’ve discovered. Again, it’s been challenging to find the few jewels among the plain old rocks. I really hadn’t realized how many apps were out there, nor how terrible some of them could be! The ones I list below (in no particular order) are the ones that I like because of their educational value, and that kids like for their entertainment value. Each of these apps (except for Count Sort Match) offers a free “lite” version and a full price version. Click on the title or the picture to see the app in the app store."

How To Capture Ideas at Presentations and Events by Doing Visual Recording on the iPad

Robin Good: Rachel Smith explains in very simple words how you can use your iPad to capture and record visually the key ideas and concepts presented during a lecture, keynote, training class or presentation.

She provides a good round-up of four relevant tools that can be used for this task, analyzing their key pros and cons as well as providing logistic and technical advice on how to best organize and setup yourself for doing visual recording on the iPad.

As similar tools will provide more ready-made icons, templates and patterns available for this kind of real-time idea-capturing, this rare and pioneering visual recording work will begin to catch up even more rapidly.

Very useful. 8/10

62 Ideas For Using The iPad In The Classroom [Presentation]

62 Ideas For Using The iPad In The Classroom [Presentation] | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Some of the ideas for using the iPad in the classroom in the following presentation by scribd user denag33 are better than others. Projecting an image, making music, controlling your classroom computer, using it as a mini-whiteboard, accessing information, keeping notes, blogging, tracking an IEP checklist, making an impromptu teleprompter, and creating concept maps are some of the better ones. Some of the presentation is a bit janky as well–illegible text, for starters–but the inclusion of both apps and ideas together, along with the sheer number of ideas, made it worth sharing."

Education Technology: Apps in the Middle School Classroom

Education Technology: Apps in the Middle School Classroom | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

Karin has three kids, two in middle school. Like most people who live with or teach kids this age, she knows that what’s in now will be passé in a day, and that few kids want to admit that school can be cool. So when her daughter came home from a friend’s house chattering about life in Jamestown in colonial days, Karin was eager to know what sparked this enthusiasm. Perhaps she should have guessed: It was an iPad app. Karin looked up the Early Jamestown history app in the App Store (it’s free), and she found other interactive history apps there as well. Maybe one of them will also interest her kids."
