"Created by the same team behind  ‘Zombies, Run’ comes this superb augmented reality fitness adventure. The Walk places you at the scene of a bomb explosion in Inverness station, and you’re given a package that could save the world. To stay alive, you’ll need to walk the length of the UK. The Walk is more than just a great pedometer/step counter — it’s a way to turn walking into a journey, a challenge, and a rip-roaring adventure.  A perfect addition to any classroom or as motivation for an apathetic student cohort. I will be recommending this to my Year 12 students to encourage Active Transport options."

"Our sixth post about apps. This time we're writing as part of @Ideas_Factory's Blapp Snapp.

We have some apps we've used for developing thinking, perseverance and problem solving skills. They don't fit into any particular subject or key stage and these are probably just a few in an ocean of puzzle apps, but they're the ones we've used."

20+ Ways to Integrate iPad in Your PBL Classroom ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Are you looking for some inspiration and new ideas on how to integrate iPad in your PBL based classroom? The graphic below from our colleagues in Teachthought is a wonderful start. Project based learning, as we have constantly argued in our previous posts, is a powerful pedagogical approach to learning and teaching. The core tenets underpinning the philosophy of PBL are grounded in socially collaborative and constructionist theories of learning. PBL enhances students learning through engaging them in real-life and authentic learning tasks and when coupled with digital media and technology, PBL can be more empowering to students."

20 iPad Gaming Apps to Boost Kids Critical Thinking Skills ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

20 iPad Gaming Apps to Boost Kids Critical Thinking Skills ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Gaming is an important component of the child's cognitive and emotional growth. In his wonderful book " What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy. Second Edition: Revised and Updated Edition " http://amzn.to/1bOeA48 James Paul Gee argued for the importance of game play for the learners' developing personalty and the honing of their thinking capacities. Gee analyzed several of the popular video and online games like Sims City, and War of Warcraft, to mention but a few , and found out that the learning design informing these games  are behind their sweeping popularity among gamers in all around the world. Gee further claimed that investing time in playing these games does impinge positively on the learning skills of kids. It, among many other things, help them develop strategic thinking, problem solving, active critical thinking, and meta-level thinking. Check out this post http://bit.ly/19nKi7H ; to learn more about the learning principles embedded in game play as conceptualized by Gee."

21 Incredible Maker Ed Kits For Learning - TeachThought

21 Incredible Maker Ed Kits For Learning - TeachThought | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Being a relatively new concept, the definition of Maker Ed isn’t exactly set in stone, though it roughly relates learning making making.

What your definition of “making” is will likely help you form your definition of maker ed and learning through making, whether that be clay for sculpting, wood and saws for building, or apps for digital wares.

The 21 kits below are a part of this movement, but they’re also incredibly cool. They have less to do with making from scratch and more to do with making from pre-made materials (kits), but that doesn’t make them any less useful for learning through play and creation. Oh, and we’ve got 2 or 3 books in there as well."

Math Duel - One iPad, Two Players - iPad Apps for School

Math Duel - One iPad, Two Players - iPad Apps for School | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Math Duel is an iPad app that could be a hit in a classroom that doesn’t have enough iPads for every student. Math Duel provides a split screen so that two students can compete in races to correctly answer mathematics problem as quickly as they can. Each player is presented an addition, multiplication, subtraction, or division problem to answer in the app. Both players are shown the same type of problem at the same time."

Allison Pawlowski's curator insight, December 15, 2013 6:38 PM

Competition is a great way to make math more enjoyable for students.  It is also a great, informal method teachers can use to assess their students.  A math facts tournament would allow students to pratice their math facts in an exciting forum, and also provide motivation for students to learn these necessary facts.  The tournament would also provide different teirs of students, which could be used later to group students, and allow differentiated instruction.
