Brain training app brings big data to human cognition - arstechnica

Brain training app brings big data to human cognition - arstechnica | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"One of the problems with cognitive and behavioral research is getting a good cross-section of the general population. Although they're convenient to work with, a couple hundred college students rarely represent the full diversity of human capability and behavior, yet that's exactly what many studies rely on. But a brain-training game may now provide access to data on scales that behavioral scientists probably never dreamed of. With a user base of over 35 million, the data obtained through the game could help us tease out very subtle effects. But as a start, a team of researchers have focused on some simpler questions: how aging and alcohol affect our ability to learn."

iPads And… Combining the Physical and Digital in Elementary Classrooms - A Platform for Good.ORG

iPads And… Combining the Physical and Digital in Elementary Classrooms - A Platform for Good.ORG | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"When I was still in the classroom, my fourth graders engaged in an interdisciplinary study of Africa culminating in an Africa Travel Fair. Students created booths to advertise a country, and the school community visited the event. During my first year, we built an Africa website. While they enjoyed the process, the lack of a tangible product made the effort feel hollow, so in the following years, we focused on physical projects and ways to more seamlessly integrate technology into the learning experience."

"Science is one of the areas where the impact of technology has been markedly observed. It triggered an unprecedented revolution and reshaped people's knowledge about the world. Disable the Picture Frame Button from the iPad Lock Screen

Disable the Picture Frame Button from the iPad Lock Screen | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"Though the iPad Picture Frame feature is nice, having it appear on the lock screen can be a problem. For one, it’s very easy to accidentally tap which is just frustrating, but perhaps more important is the potential privacy issues caused by Picture Frame defaulting to show the entire Photo app Camera Roll. This means that even with a lock screen passcode set, tapping that flower button may wind up displaying some pictures you don’t really want to share with the world."

Can apps teach kids about emotions? - USA Today

Can apps teach kids about emotions? - USA Today | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"How do we raise emotionally aware and well-adjusted kids? With lots of talking and sharing, of course. For some kids, digital media can also help by packaging powerful messages inside enticing apps. In one, kids explore how we are the same and how we are different from one another. In another, they interact with silly characters to learn their emotional responses. And in a third, virtual friends share stories to get 'tweens thinking about how to best handle emotionally charged situations. Here's a closer look at these three masterful apps."
